AllerAir 4000 Series Air Purifiers
The AllerAir 4000 air purifiers are compact air purifiers that pack a lot of punch. Contained in its 17" tall housing is 12 lbs of carbon (either VOCARB or MAC-B), specially blended to remove chemicals, odors, and gases. Powerful and versatile, the AllerAir air purifier is loved by many for its economical value and industrial strength.
Things I like about the AllerAir 4000
Very heavy duty
Like all AllerAir air purifiers, the AllerAir 4000 units are hard-working and heavy duty. They can cover up to 1200 square feet, though we recommend you use it for 750 square feet or less, for a higher number of air changes per hour. Not only can an AllerAir take on a large area, it is packed with carbon, providing the 4000 units with serious filtration.
Highly customizable
With a variety of models in the 4000, 5000, and 6000 series, you can choose exactly the right air purifier for your specific job. Within the 4000 Series (EXEC & VOCARB) there are options to remove odors, volatile organic chemicals, and tobacco smoke, in addition to a UV model which can neutralize airborne viruses and bacteria.
Extremely durable
The air purifier housing is constructed from super durable metal that does not off-gas. The AllerAir both looks and feels like it is built to last. The heavy-duty housing is coated with a baked on enamel finish to both protect your filters and resist damages and dents. The filters themselves have a decent lifespan. The pre-filter will generally be the first item that needs to be replaced, but vacuuming this item periodically will extend it beyond the approximate three month change interval. The carbon will need to be replaced every 1-3 years, and the HEPA filter on these units generally lasts 3-5 years depending on usage.
UV light option
The UV light is an ideal option for sterile facilities – hospitals, labs, daycares, clean production areas. You'll also be interested in this option if you are allergic to mold or just get sick a lot. The UV lamp destroys antigens and pathogens by emitting ultraviolet waves, which alter their DNA as they pass over the lamp, making them harmless.
Three fan speeds
The fan can be set to three speeds – high, medium, and low. This is the only control on these units, so there are no overly complicated electronics to figure out. You can set a lower speed for when you want the air purifier to run more quietly or use less electricity, and you can set a higher speed when there are high amounts of chemicals, gases, odors, or particles to remove. For the most part, I kept the AllerAir 4000 running on low, where it was both effective and fairly quiet.
Wheels
It comes with four casters which make it much easier to move. You can move it inside your home, office, or work area, without worrying about it scuffing the floors.
Affordable
Starting at only $400, an AllerAir air purifier is a highly affordable way to remove high levels of air contaminants, even in extremely heavy duty applications and industrial environments. With a high fan speed for wide area coverage and several pounds of carbon to remove high levels of odors, chemicals, and gases, this air purifier is a great deal for heavy duty applications and industrial situations.
Things I don't like about the AllerAir 4000
Difficult to move
I found the AllerAir to be hard to maneuver. Though the casters do make it easier, it would be helpful if there were side grips or handles. The cylindrical shape can be a bit difficult to hold onto. At around 40 lbs, the 4000 units are also quite heavy. Of course, it's heavy because it is constructed from durable materials and packed with odor and chemical-removing carbon, which are necessary for heavy-duty jobs. Still, you probably do not want to move it up and down stairs.
No fan speed markings
The control panel is very simple. There are no markings on the dial to show which fan speed you are selecting – you just have to listen to the change in noise level. However, it is no more difficult that operating a ceiling fan and is not a problem once you get the hang of it.
Very functional design
Admittedly, the AllerAir is not the most attractive air purifier available. It looks very industrial – I did not think it blended very well with the décor in my house. However, it's great for jobs where function is more important than form.
Filter change
Despite AllerAir’s claims, the filters are not as easy to change as they are in many air purifiers. To change the filter, you need to remove the bottom of the housing using a screw driver. But don't be too alarmed – there is an operating manual with clear illustrations and easy-to-follow instructions.
In summary, the AllerAir 4000 EXEC and VOCARB air purifiers are great at what they do. It is designed for economic, powerful, and versatile control over significant amounts of contaminants – and they do a terrific job. It is recommended for industrial strength applications such as construction environments, restaurants and bars, artist's studios, basements and attics, and maybe even a large family or all-purpose room inside the house. If you are looking for a bedroom air purifier, we recommend something a little quieter and more user-friendly, like the best-selling
Austin Air Healthmate.
