Dear Fellow Allergy Sufferers,
When I woke up this morning, I looked out my window and noticed a sea of leaves raining down in our yard. Fall is officially here! Last night, the World Series ended with the New York Yankees winning their impressive 27th baseball championship. This morning for the first time in months, I woke up congested with puffy eyes. Is it allergies? Do I have a cold? I do not know. The exact cause is hard to pin down and probably is a combination of things.
What I do know is that minimizing my exposure to allergens will help me feel better. Also, it is very windy in Atlanta today. Because of the windy conditions, I will minimize my time spent outdoors. Simply put, I don’t want to get sick right before a beautiful fall weekend with my family.
In addition to using all the allergen avoidance products we recommend, including Allergy Armor mattress covers and pillow covers, I am taking a few additional measures to prevent morning congestion:
- Making sure I have enough Flonase. I brought the prescription bottle with me to work today to refill it.
- Making sure I have enough Zyrtec-D. I ran out this morning, and purchasing it is somewhat difficult because it is considered a controlled substance. I find the decongestant very helpful. I call it my wonder drug.
- Making sure we have an ample supply of NeilMed saline nasal irrigation packets. I like to do this on a daily basis.
- Putting more emphasis on washing my hands and using Purell. I have a bottle at my desk.
As my mother always says, fighting allergies is a one – two punch. You need to avoid allergens (especially in your bedroom) and you need to take the allergy medicine that will help you. This reminds me of another one-two punch. We are teaching our daughter how to brush her teeth. The one-two punch theory holds true--to keep your teeth clean, you have to brush and you have to floss.

Excellent air purifier - Blueair 270E Air Purifier
Reviewed by: A hypersensitivity pneumonitis
sufferer from Illinois
I purchased the Blueair 270E air purifier for my office after
developing sensitivity to certain allergens in my office
environment - pet dander, mold spores, dust. My office size is
approximately 14 x 18, which I share with another employee.
This
purifier runs extremely quietly on the first two settings,
although the air exchange on the first setting is, naturally,
low. The third setting really cleans the air, and I can work
with it running. At this setting, I compare the sound level to
that of a inexpensive box fan running on low. It is not
bothersome to me in the least. My officemate says she does not
mind running it on the third setting either.
The electronic
display on the top of the purifier shows the dust level and the
smell level. A little smiley face next to the level bars
indicates if your dust and smell level is making the face smile
or frown. There is also a display indicator for when the filter
needs replacing. The filter is a bit pricey, as is any Blueair
purifier filter. But if one is looking for a quiet purifier to
aid in cleaning the air for better breathing, the benefits
outweigh the higher cost. Also, the filter needs to be replaced
approximately every six months and, again, the price may be
prohibitive to some individuals.
However, in my experience with
the 270E, its performance in my office has been awesome and I'm
able to breathe so I'll gladly pay for the filter replacement.
One final benefit to mention of the 270E is that it has a timer.
Since I am in an office using my employer's electricity with his
approval, I might add I can use the timer to maximize the
necessary time I need the purifier running. This is an excellent
purifier for an office, a bedroom, or a room within a home which
needs the air purified quietly.
