Austin Air Healthmate HEPA Air Purifiers
Based on proven, reliable HEPA technology, the 360° air intake of the Austin Air Healthmate HM-400 air purifier cleans over 250 cubic feet of air every minute. This Austin air purifier offers the best deal for those with moderate allergies who are looking for a reliable and low maintenance air purifier that delivers first rate air filtration. For smaller areas, the Healthmate Jr. is an ideal choice that offers the same great air filtration, but with a smaller footprint. Austin Air Healthmate HEPA Air Purifiers - A Closer Look
|Austin Air Healthmate Fan and Motor Assembly
Austin Air has manufactured the Healthmate for almost 20 years. The simple, economical design of the unit makes it an attractive, long term value. Air is drawn through the unit with a powerful PSC motor through 15 lbs. of activated carbon and zeolite and 60 sq. ft. of HEPA cloth. The unit only uses 100 watts of power on its highest setting, not much more than a light bulb.
|Cutaway of Austin Air's Construction and Engineering
Austin Air cleaners are not made of any plastic parts. Plastics off gas and cause problems for the chemically sensitive. That's why Austin Air cleaners have all steel construction. The sturdy steel construction of every Austin Air product guarantees that your air cleaner will last for years. It's not uncommon for owners to still be operating their Austin 10 or even 15 years after they purchased it. Anymore, few home appliances can boast that kind of longevity.
Austin Air's high efficiency PSC motor draws minimal current. Even on the highest setting, it will cost less per month than what you spend on a large mocha cappuccino.
|Austin Air Healthmate Filter Assembly
The pre-filter will capture visible dust and hair, and the exterior should be vacuumed monthly (no disassembly required).
The built-in Permafilt pre-filter then traps medium sized particles such as pollen and mold spores. The carbon / zeolite mixture and a medical grade HEPA cloth combine to create a filter that is almost 4 inches thick. This greatly extends the filter life. Austin guarantees this filter on a pro-rated basis for 5 years. We recommend leaving the unit on all the time, even turning it on its highest setting when you are not in the room. With constant use, we recommend changing the filter after 3 years.

1) Permafilt Pre-filter
With the additional large particle pre-filter, the Austin Healthmate provides 4 stages of air filtration that rivals that of any air purifier on the market.
- GREAT PRODUCT - WHEN I SAW ONE IN THE HOSPITAL I WAS VISITED I KNEW IT'S A WINNER
I BOUGHT THIS AUSTIN AIR HEALTHMATE ON AUGUST 07 - I LOVE IT....NEED TO REPLACE THE FILTER
BUT IT IS WORTH IT. HOUSE NOW HAS NO PROTECTION AGAINST ALL THE DUST. I HIHGLY RECOMMENDED IT. NANCY D.
- Saved my life!
I was suffering severe asthma attacks at night and then I received my HealthMate! I am breathing at night and I am actually sleeping at night. It saved my life for sure.
- Best Air Filter
I have asthma and my family has allergies. Austin Air makes an immediate difference in the quality of air your family breathes. I recommend this to everyone. Well worth the money.
- Good product
I've had this for a few weeks now, and I've been happy with the performance. My boyfriend is allergic to my cat, but he's had no problems in the room with the purifier so far. My only issue is that we received 2 damaged/broken units. The first unit did not work on the highest setting. The second arrived with a large dent on the side, but was functional. We opted to keep it because we could push out the dent and hold it in place with duct tape and we didn't want to go another few days without it. Nonetheless, the return of the first unit was seamless. The customer service at Achoo Allergy was very responsive and made the replacement very easy.
- dust eater
We always had a dust problem tried several solutions none worked then I found Healthmate. When the instructions said place in bedroom I'm thinking how can this possibly filter the whole house which is 1900 SQ Ft from a upstairs bedroom. So I did a wipe test I wiped a shelf that collects dust every day and is impossible to keep up with well here I am 7 days later and no dust accumulated. The filter is in a upstairs bedroom and the shelf is in the downstairs living room. I used to wake up all stuffed up and now I'm clear as a bell. I cant say enough about this miracle filter. The best investment I have made in a long time.
- Air Purifier
Excellent product .. Works well .. and the air seems cleaner
- My allergy/dust zapper
I have 3 filter units in my 2100 sq ft home. This one being the more powerful is in the main room. 2 dogs 5 cats, is a lot of dander and since I live in rual america, pollen and dust are also a big problem for me. I found out a 3 years ago I had allergies to my cats and plants. NO, I did not give my pets away, My first step was to get rid of the drapes by installing new pella windows with the blinds between, removed some carpet and put in pergo, and purchased less expensive air purifiers. With each step I felt better, not so dependent on the medication. Then I found this website. Back and forth I went..$$$, finally I called up customer service to help me in the decision making process. With their help and 2 weeks later, I decided to try the unit as I was told it was returnable. Now, 2 months later, i have come to realize that there is LESS DUST all around and Sneezing almost non existant.. and I have not taken any medication for a couple months now. This very solid unit mesh surrounding unit, can be easily dented if you PLOW into it but will not hurt the function, really pumps out the air. I keep it on high my room is too big for the 4x air rotation per hour. Noise, to be honest I do not notice it although yes there is noise, but quiet noise. This unit is easy to move around on its casters to different locations, but for now it says in the living room. I opened up the unit from the bottom to check out the filter..wow HEAVY, must be one strong fan to pull the air through this many layers. Over all happy to have this in my home. Thinking about getting a smaller one for the bedroom, but space is limited. Overall pretty darn happy with the results. From customer service help to purchase to extremely quick delivery, to results this unit has given for me...I am happy I made the purchase.
- AUSTIN HEALTHMATE
I have 2 cats and 2 dogs and decided i wanted a air purifier that was a good one and not something that would last a year or two. The cheaper air purifiers are of far less quality than the austin healthmate. Also when you add up the cost of filters for these cheaper units one is saving nothing by purchasing them, all you have is a inferior machine. I love the quality of this machine and because its made here in america should mean something to all of us. I am very satisfied with the healthmate and plan on purchasing the austin healthmate jr for my bedroom. These units are 5 star in my book, excellent quality that i would recommend to all. D. Monahan
- Great Product
I am allergic to everything under the sun and keep this running all the time. When we lost power last week due to the hurricane, I noticed a complete difference in the quality of care w/o it.
- I can breathe again
I cannot thank you enough for your informative website that helped me decide that the Austin was the best selection for our needs and budget. We have had issues with mold in our home due to leaks, and also we are surrounded by trees and experience seasonal allergies. Every winter & spring I would experience asthma. My son was consistently congested and experienced head colds which led to bronchial infections. My husband had all the classic allergy symptoms. Considered moving, but decided to try this - purify the air. Within a day the air was noticeably cleaner. Within 3 days all of our symptoms were gone. We hope to purchase smaller units for our 2 bedrooms to extend this level of air quality. The customer service at Achoo is top level. I will look to this company first for our allergy needs. I understand that this is a costly purchase for many, but consider what you spend on doctors, medication, and lost time from work. You really can't put a price on wellness. Thank you so much Austin and Achoo! I have my health back.

Austin Air Healthmate
As Austin Air's flagship air purifier, the Austin Healthmate 400 offers a balance of performance and affordability. While providing few frills, Austin air purifiers deliver solid results for customers seeking quality filtration coupled with ease of use. As one of the most popular units on the market, there is much to like about the Healthmate and few drawbacks.
NOTE: This review covers the Austin Healthmate, but all points listed about this unit is applicable to the Austin Healthmate Jr. as well. The two primary differences between the units are the size and coverage area. The Jr. is smaller in size and capacity thus suitable for smaller rooms. Due to the smaller, lighter size the Jr. does not come equipped with casters. They are an optional accessory.
What I like about the Austin Healthmate
The HEPA filter in this unit has a 3-5 year lifespan. When comparing this to the cost of the filter, regular maintenance is inexpensive. The Healthmate has two pre-filters around the HEPA/Carbon canister to trap large and medium sized particles such as hair & lint. Periodically vacuuming the largeparticle pre-filter will extend the overall life of the larger filter drum.
Regardless of the setting the Healthmate provides consistent filtration results. Pushing 400 CFM of air at high speed, the Austin could adequately exchange the air in room roughly three times larger than for what it is actually rated.
Austin units are constructed entirely of steel which is part of the reason why HealthMates have an expected lifespan of anywhere from 10-20 years. This powder-coated steel body and chassis makes off-gassing virtually nonexistent. In addition to this, the Healthmate produces no harmful ozone.
Austin's filtration systems are all sealed systems with thick gaskets around each end of the filter. There is no air leakage or unfiltered air mixing with purified air.
All of the Austin units offer 360° air intake to maximize air flow. Clean air is discharged through one vent at the top of the unit, which can be very useful for allergy and asthma sufferers who need concentrated, purified air immediately. This design also ensure that cleaned air is pushed out away from the machine, not immediately cycled back through.
The Healthmate is very low maintenance. The carbon pre-filter is changed once a year as opposed to every 3-6 months for other popular brands. The HEPA / Carbon / Zeolite filter change is required only every 3-5 years. Aside from occasionally vacuuming the built-in pre-filter, there is nothing more that needs to be done to an Austin unit aside from plugging it in, turning it on and enjoying fresh, clean air. Changing the filter is simply as well. Remove four screws from the bottom plate, remove plate and simply replace the filter and separate pre-filter.
As with all Austin air purifiers, the Healthmate is available in five colors, Sandstone, Black, Midnight Blue, White and Silver. This gives you some options when it comes to matching an air purifier with the decor of a room. The Healthmate Jr. series additionally offers Pink and Baby Blue which are perfect for any nursery.
Austin Air is a U.S. company. Their air purifiers are not made overseas with cheap labor and inferior plastic components. Austin Air is based here in the U.S., using an American workforce, proudly creating quality products in a way that helps drive our economy.
Lastly, Austin has been making air purifiers for nearly as long as anyone else in business, with few exceptions. The company has an excellent reputation for providing reliable, quality machines at reasonable prices. Over the years, customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and informed customers who know what to expect before purchasing these units rarely have reason to complain.
What I did not like about the Austin Healthmate
There are a few things to keep in mind when considering the Austin. Though Austin air purifiers can be considered an "economy" air purifier, you can easily pay twice as much for a unit that will give you only marginally better results. The Healthmate offers few gadgets or embellishments. With Austin, there is less gadgetry in exchange for more ease and carefree use.
These units can be heavy. Because of the steel construction and heavy duty filters, the units are not the easiest to move. The 400 series (all full size models) have casters, and while this makes them easier to move they are not really considered "portable". (The 200 series, Jr. models, lacks the casters, but is not nearly as heavy.)
When it comes to air purifiers, the Austin Healthmate provides the most bang for your buck. There is nothing on the market that can offer this quality of filtration and durability in this price range. While it lacks many of the additional features of other air purifiers, it makes up for it in a reasonable initial cost, low maintenance costs and top notch performance. There is a reason why Austin has been in business for as long as it has, quality products at an affordable price. So for anyone looking for an easy to use, easy to maintain air purifying workhorse, the Austin Healthmate is the best choice that won't break the bank.
Thank you as I am interested in purchasing this product.
Some air purifiers specifically generate ozone. Older models and still some used today for remediating flood/water damaged areas create ozone because it can clean the air. The problem is it’s a lung irritant.
We offer NO air purifiers that create any harmful levels of ozone. All models and brands we offer are CARB approved. For many years CARB, California Air Resource Board, had more stringent guidelines than even the EPA when it comes to acceptable levels of ozone. Currently, both now use the 0.070 ppm limit set by CARB in 2005. The EPA lowered their threshold to this 0.070 ppm limit as of last October. All appliances have to meet EPA standards and the vast majority of all electrical appliances sold in the U.S. also meet CARB standards so they don’t miss out on the California market. So, in the strictest terms, every air purifier motor produces minute levels of ozone, but the levels are typically either too small to be measured or fall below CARB set limits. EPA limits on
Generally speaking, if your cell phone and other electrical devices in your home don’t cause you problems, no air purifier you’ll find on our site will either.
Hope that helps!
