Austin Healthmate Air Purifier - A Closer Look
Austin Air Healthmate Fan and Motor Assembly
Austin Air has manufactured the Healthmate for almost 20 years. The
simple, economical design of the unit makes it an attractive,
long term value. Air is drawn through the unit with a powerful PSC motor through 15 lbs. of activated carbon and zeolite and 60
sq. ft. of HEPA cloth. The unit only uses 100 watts of power on its
highest setting, not much more than a light bulb.
Cutaway of Austin Air's Construction and Engineering
Austin Air cleaners are not made of any plastic parts. Plastics off
gas and cause problems for the chemically sensitive. That's why
Austin Air cleaners have all steel construction. The sturdy steel
construction of every Austin Air product guarantees that your air
cleaner will last for years. It's not uncommon for owners to still be operating their Austin
10 or even 15 years after they purchased it. Anymore, few home appliances can boast that
kind of longevity.
Austin Air's high efficiency PSC motor draws minimal current. Even
on the highest setting, it will cost less per month than what you spend on a large mocha
Austin Air Healthmate Filter Assembly
The pre-filter will capture visible dust and hair, and
the exterior should be vacuumed monthly (no disassembly required).
The built-in Permafilt pre-filter then traps medium sized
particles such as pollen and mold spores. The carbon / zeolite mixture and a medical grade HEPA cloth combine to create a
filter that is almost 4 inches thick. This greatly extends the
filter life. Austin guarantees this filter on a pro-rated basis for
5 years. We recommend leaving the unit on all the time, even turning
it on its highest setting when you are not in the room. With constant use, we
recommend changing the filter after 3 years.

I smoke ... occasionally in the house ... but I hate the smell of smoke and I certainly don't want any discoloration of my walls, blinds or other things. We ordered this and have been delighted from day one. A side benefit is delightful cool air in the hot desert. Although our 1st home is not in the desert, we will be ordering a second one for that one also.

I was suffering severe asthma attacks at night and then I received my HealthMate! I am breathing at night and I am actually sleeping at night. It saved my life for sure.
Customer Q & A
A couple of questions
1. What is the estimated square foot coverage for the Jr. Filter? What about the standard filter?
2. I live with a smoker, estimated at least a pack a day. Should the filter be placed in the room she smokes in?
Thanks for your help and any suggestions are greatly appreciated:
A: 250 sq. ft. jr. vs. 500 sq. ft. full size - based on 6 air exchanges per hour. This rate can vary though if less than 6 air exchanges per hour is ok. For example, if you are fine with 4 air exchanges per hour, you likely use the full size Austin in a space as large as 750 sq. ft. And yes, the unit would do best being placed in the same room as the source. While using a smaller unit, say in your room, would help you, by placing a unit in the source room, you can get rid of much of the smoke before it disperses throughout the home. Hope that helps!
Q2: What is the maximum clean-air delivery rate CADR for this Brand/Unit?
A: Unknown. Many of the top air purifier manufacturers, like Austin Air, IQAir, etc., are not paying members of AHAM, the trade organization made up of appliance manufacturers, which also happens to be the body that has developed the CADR testing. CADR has some limitations as far as what it actually indicates in terms of performance. The older, now phased out, ozone generating units to rank very high in CADR testing, but we know that the technology causes more problems than it eliminates. The CADR also gives little indication of long term performance. The testing period is 24 hours, and it tends to favor units that move more air quickest, like Blueair. Those are just a few of the drawbacks with the CADR, but you will run across a few mfgs who do not submit their product for this test.
Q3: Will the Austin HealthMate Jr. air purifier remove chemicals smells like perfumes and cleaning supplies.
A: Yes. For nuisance odors, chemicals and cleaning fumes, the standard HealthMate Jr. should work fine. I might opt for the Plus model though, if you are more sensitive or the pollutants are stronger than what you'd find in a typical household. The carbon blend in the Plus is more robust than the standard blend in the HealthMate. So with the Plus you can trap and capture a wider variety of chemical pollutants. Other than that, just match the right air purifier with the room size, and you should be set!

Austin Air Healthmate
As Austin Air's flagship air purifier, the Austin Healthmate 400
offers a balance of performance and affordability. While providing
few frills, Austin air purifiers deliver solid results for customers seeking
quality filtration coupled with ease of use. As one of the most
popular units on the market, there is much to like about the
Healthmate and few drawbacks.
NOTE: This review covers the Austin Healthmate, but all points
listed about this unit is applicable to the Austin Healthmate Jr. as
well. The two primary differences between the units are the size and
coverage area. The Jr. is smaller in size and capacity thus suitable
for smaller rooms. Due to the smaller, lighter size the Jr.
does not come equipped with casters. They are an optional accessory.
What I like about the Austin Healthmate
The HEPA filter in this unit has a 3-5 year lifespan. When comparing
this to the cost of the filter, regular maintenance is inexpensive.
The Healthmate has two pre-filters around the HEPA/Carbon canister to trap
large and medium sized particles such as hair & lint. Periodically vacuuming the large
particle pre-filter will extend the overall life of the larger filter drum.
Regardless of the setting the Healthmate provides consistent
filtration results. Pushing 400 CFM of air at high speed, the Austin
could adequately exchange the air in room roughly three times larger
than for what it is actually rated.
Austin units are constructed entirely of steel which is part of the reason why HealthMates have an expected lifespan of
anywhere from 10-20 years. This powder-coated steel body and chassis makes
off-gassing virtually nonexistent. In addition to this, the Healthmate produces no harmful ozone.
Austin's filtration systems are all sealed systems with thick gaskets around each end of the filter. There is no air leakage or unfiltered air mixing with purified air.
All of the Austin units offer 360° air intake to maximize air flow.
Clean air is discharged through one vent at the top of the unit,
which can be very useful for allergy and asthma sufferers who need concentrated, purified air immediately. This design also ensure that cleaned air is pushed out
away from the machine, not immediately cycled back through.
The Healthmate is very low maintenance. The carbon pre-filter is changed once a year as opposed to every 3-6 months
for other popular brands. The HEPA / Carbon / Zeolite filter change is required only every 3-5 years. Aside from
occasionally vacuuming the built-in pre-filter, there is nothing more that needs to be done to an Austin unit aside
from plugging it in, turning it on and enjoying fresh, clean air. Changing the filter is simply as well.
Remove four screws from the bottom plate, remove plate and simply replace the filter and separate pre-filter.
As with all Austin air purifiers, the Healthmate is available in five colors,
Sandstone, Black, Midnight Blue, White and Silver. This gives you some options when it comes to matching an
air purifier with the decor of a room. The Healthmate Jr. series
additionally offers Pink and Baby Blue which are perfect for any nursery.
Austin Air is a U.S. company. Their air purifiers are not made overseas with cheap labor and inferior plastic components. Austin Air

Lastly, Austin has been making air purifiers for nearly as long as
anyone else in business, with few exceptions. The company has an
excellent reputation for providing reliable, quality machines at
reasonable prices. Over the years, customer feedback has been
overwhelmingly positive, and informed customers who know what to
expect before purchasing these units rarely have reason to complain.
What I did not like about the Austin Healthmate
There are a few things to keep in mind when considering the Austin.
Though Austin air purifiers can be considered an "economy" air purifier, you can
easily pay twice as much for a unit that will give you only
marginally better results. The Healthmate offers few gadgets or
embellishments. With Austin, there is less gadgetry in
exchange for more ease and carefree use.
These units can be heavy. Because of the steel construction and
heavy duty filters, the units are not the easiest to move. The 400
series (all full size models) have casters, and while this makes them easier to move they are not really
considered "portable". (The 200 series, Jr. models, lacks the casters, but is not nearly as heavy.)
When it comes to air purifiers, the Austin Healthmate provides the
most bang for your buck. There is nothing on the market that can
offer this quality of filtration and durability in this price range. While it lacks
many of the additional features of other air purifiers, it makes up
for it in a reasonable initial cost, low maintenance costs and top notch performance. There is a
reason why Austin has been in business for as long as it has,
quality products at an affordable price. So for anyone looking for
an easy to use, easy to maintain air purifying workhorse, the Austin
Healthmate is the best choice that won't break the bank.
