Shipping was very quick so I was able to start using the air purifier soon after I ordered. Pleased with the quality of the case and ease of operation. I have been using the Hunter air purifier for the past 8 years so I felt it was time to replace it. The sound from the Austin is very similar, about the same volume but a little lower tone. The Austin moves much more air through it than the Hunter. I just leave the Austin on the medium setting and let it run 24/7. I like to use a ceiling fan when it gets a little warm and with the Austin being on wheels I can just spin it around a little if I want some extra air circulating on a warmer night. A good mid-priced unit if you just want clean air and no fuss over filters.

I have been suffering from severe allergies to my rabbit for the past 2 years. My rabbit is my best friend and lives in my bedroom with me in Manhattan. The thought of "getting rid of him" just isn't an option - as I told my doctor. I have been on medication for a long time to control my allergic reaction and so I thought I should get an air filter for my bedroom where both me and my rabbit live. I got the Austin Air Healthmate Jr. at the recommendation of the Achoo Allergy customer service rep. It is FANTASTIC! My asthma has all but disappeared. There is no more smell from my rabbit's litter box. I can now sleep through the night without needing an inhaler. Unbelievable how much this has helped me. The best $400 I ever spent! There is a constant whoosh sound from the air purifier, but it is actually soothing to sleep to and I don't notice the sound at all during the day. Highly recommend the Austin Healthmate!

Initially I bought a different brand that I had to return. It "whistled" when it ran and, because it was made of plastic and made in China the air that exited from it smelled like melting plastic. I then bought Austin's Healthmate 400 and could not be more excited and pleased with this product. First off, it is made in the United States. Secondly, it is made of 23 gauge stainless steel. The guarantee on the filter and machine is 5 years AND you should see this thing work. I bought it mainly because of second hand smoke drifting into my apartment from the lower level. This is the first time in six years that I have awakened in the morning with no smoke in the air. There is no guarantee or suggestion that it will pull the smell from my bedroom lace curtains but, for whatever reason - it did it anyway. I am in HEAVEN. I just rolled it into the kitchen because this needed to be dealt with also - and after a half hour I can see a huge difference. I say you get what you pay for. You could pay less and feed the filter machine or get this one and likely, under normal circumstances, will not need a new filter for 4 or 5 years. This is a gem and I could not be more pleased.

Q1: Thank you for answering our questions. Before I buy I need to be assured that there are NO ionizers in this purifier, optional or not. They are killers for us with asthma and am having a hard time finding a purifier without one. Thanks so much from Hawaii.
A: There are none. Amaircare, Austin Air, AllerAir, and IQAir are all brands that do not use any type of ionization technology. Truthfully, you tend to find that more in cheaper air purifiers simply because it's a cheap, easy way for manufacturers to improve filtration results.

A: Ionizers do NOT REMOVE smoke or any molecules for that matter. Ionizers give those molecules an electrical charge which makes them stick to plates if the unit has them but also everything else in the room! Use an ionizer and you'll likely find that yes, the smoke molecules and particle pollutants are removed from the air.... and now they're stuck all over everything else. So if you enjoy wiping everything down with a rag once every few days, these are certainly the way to go!
Yes, an Austin HealthMate does remove smoke and odors. The activated carbon in the filter adsorbs smoke, odor and chemical molecules. Adsorbs - meaning it physically holds smoke and odor molecules, trapping them in the filter.

popular units on the market, there is much to like about the
Healthmate and few drawbacks.
NOTE: This review covers the Austin Healthmate, but all points
listed about this unit is applicable to the Austin Healthmate Jr. as
well. The two primary differences between the units are the size and
coverage area. The Jr. is smaller in size and capacity thus suitable
for smaller rooms. Due to the smaller, lighter size the Jr.
does not come equipped with casters. They are an optional accessory.
What I like about the Austin Healthmate
The HEPA filter in this unit has a 3-5 year lifespan. When comparing
this to the cost of the filter, regular maintenance is inexpensive.
The Healthmate has two pre-filters around the HEPA/Carbon canister to trap
large and medium sized particles such as hair & lint. Periodically vacuuming the large
particle pre-filter will extend the overall life of the filter.
Regardless of the setting the Healthmate provides consistent
filtration results. Pushing 400 CFM of air at high speed, the Austin
could adequately exchange the air in room roughly three times larger
than for what it is actually rated.
Austin units are constructed entirely of steel. This makes
off-gassing virtually nonexistent. In addition to this, the Healthmate produces no harmful ozone.
Austin's filtration systems are all sealed systems with thick gaskets around each end of the filter. There is no air leakage or unfiltered air mixing with purified air.
All of the Austin units offer 360 degree air intake to maximize air flow.
Clean air is discharged through one vent at the top of the unit,
which can be very useful for allergy and asthma sufferers who need concentrated, purified air immediately.
The Healthmate is very low maintenance. The carbon pre-filter is changed once a year as opposed to every 3-6 months
for other popular brands. The HEPA / Carbon / Zeolite filter change is required only every 3-5 years. Aside from
occasionally vacuuming the built-in pre-filter, there is nothing more that needs to be done to an Austin unit aside
from plugging it in, turning it on and enjoying fresh, clean air. Changing the filter is simply as well.
Remove four screws from the bottom plate, remove plate and simply replace the filter and separate pre-filter.
As with all Austin air purifiers, the Healthmate is available in five colors,
Sandstone, Black, Midnight Blue, White and Silver. This gives you some options when it comes to matching an
air purifier with the decor of a room. The Healthmate Jr. series
additionally offers Pink and Baby Blue which are perfect for any nursery.
Austin Air is a U.S. company. Their air purifiers are not made overseas with cheap labor. Austin Air

What I did not like about the Austin Healthmate
There are a few things to keep in mind when considering the Austin.
Though Austin air purifiers can be considered an "economy" air purifier, you can
easily pay twice as much for a unit that will give you only
marginally better results. The Healthmate offers few gadgets or
embellishments. With Austin, it is less gadgetry in
exchange for more ease and carefree use.
These units can be heavy. Because of the steel construction and
heavy duty filters, the units are not the easiest to move. The 400
series have casters, and while this makes them easier to move they are not really
considered "portable". (The 200 series lacks the casters, but is not nearly as heavy.)
When it comes to air purifiers, the Austin Healthmate provides the
most bang for your buck. There is nothing on the market that can
offer this quality of filtration and durability in this price range. While it lacks
many of the additional features of other air purifiers, it makes up
for it in a reasonable initial cost, low maintenance costs and top notch performance. There is a
reason why Austin has been in business for as long as it has,
quality products at an affordable price. So for anyone looking for
an easy to use, easy to maintain air purifying workhorse, the Austin
Healthmate is the best choice that won't break the bank.
