The Permafilt pre-filter will capture visible dust and hair and
should be vacuumed monthly 360 degrees around via the outside of the
intake grate(no disassembly required).
The carbon / zeolite mixture and HEPA cloth combine to create a
filter that is almost 4 inches thick. This greatly extends the
filter life. Austin guarantees this filter on a pro-rated basis for
5 years. We recommend leaving the unit on all the time, even turning
it on its highest setting when you are not in the room. Therefore we
recommend changing the filter after 3 years of constant use. |

I ordered my air purifier and it came very quickly. The unit works very well. Also, I wanted a purifier that was a bit louder. When I turn this unit to the second setting it is the perfect white noise to help get me to sleep.

A whole new world!

We have a dog who is considered FAMILY. This guy, "Whiskers" is not going to get pushed into another room. This year my allergies started acting up again and was really worried about what to do. I did some research and decided to try the Austin Air Healthmate. I honestly can't believe how much better I feel and how incredibly clean the air is. I've used air purifiers in the past, that worked, but not as good as this and as long as the filter system lasts as long a they say it will I'll be more than satistfied.

Austin Air Healthmate 400 Air Purifier
As Austin Air’s flagship air purifier, the Austin Healthmate 400
offers a balance of performance and affordability. While providing
few frills, Austin’s deliver solid results for customers seeking
quality filtration coupled with ease of use. As one of the most
popular units on the market, there is much to like about the
Healthmate and few drawbacks.
NOTE: This review covers the Austin Healthmate 400, but all points
listed about this unit is applicable to the Austin Healthmate 200 as
well. The two primary differences between the units are the size and
presence of casters. The 200 is smaller in size and capacity thus
suitable for smaller rooms. Due to the smaller, lighter size the 200
does not need, nor come equipped with, casters.
What I like about the Austin Healthmate 400
The HEPA filter in this unit has a 3-5 year lifespan. When comparing
this to the cost of the filter, regular maintenance is inexpensive.
The Healthmate has a pre-filter wrapped around the HEPA to trap
larger particulate such as hair, and vacuuming the pre-filter will
extend the life of both.
Regardless of the setting the Healthmate provides consistent
filtration results. Pushing 400 CFM of air at high speed, the Austin
could adequately exchange the air in room roughly three times larger
than for what it is actually rated.
Austin units are constructed entirely of steel. This makes
off-gassing virtually nonexistent. In addition to this, the
Healthmate produces no harmful ozone.
Austin’s filtration systems are all sealed systems. There is no air
leakage or unfiltered air mixing with purified air.
All of the Austin units offer 360° air intake to maximize air flow.
Clean air is discharged through one vent at the top of the unit,
which can be very useful for allergy and asthma sufferers who need
concentrated, purified air immediately.
The Healthmate is very low maintenance. Filter changes are
infrequent compared to many other top models. Aside from
occasionally vacuuming the pre-filter and changing both filters
every three to five years, there is nothing more that needs to be
done to an Austin unit aside from plugging it in, turning it on and
enjoying fresh, clean air.
As with all Austins, the Healthmate is available in five colors,
Sandstone, Black, Midnight Blue, White and Silver. While not the
most stylish, there are some options when it comes to matching an
air purifier with the décor of a room. The Healthmate 200 series
additionally offers Pink and Baby Blue – perfect for a nursery.
Lastly, Austin has been making air purifiers for nearly as long as
anyone else in business, with few exceptions. The company has an
excellent reputation for providing reliable, quality machines at
reasonable prices. Over the years, customer feedback has been
overwhelmingly positive, and informed customers who know what to
expect before purchasing these units rarely have reason to complain.
What I did not like about the Austin Healthmate 400
There are a few things to keep in mind when considering the Austin.
Though Austins can be considered an “economy” air purifier, you can
easily pay twice as much for a unit that will give you only
marginally better results. The Healthmate offers few gadgets or
embellishments like electronics. With Austin, it is less gadgetry in
exchange for more ease and carefree use.
These units can be heavy. Because of the steel construction and
heavy duty filters, the units are not the easiest to move. The 400
series have casters, but that hardly makes them portable. (The 200
series lacks the casters, but is not near as heavy.)
The Healthmate is not a quiet machine, particularly when it is
running on the highest or second highest setting. Many air purifiers
have this problem, which could pose a problem for the noise
conscious sleeper using the Healthmate on any setting other than
low.
When it comes to air purifiers, the Austin Healthmate provides the
most bang for your buck. There is nothing on the market that can
offer this quality of filtration in this price range. While it lacks
many of the additional features of other air purifiers, it makes up
for it in cost, low maintenance costs and performance. There is a
reason why Austin has been in business for as long as it has,
quality products at an affordable price. So for anyone looking for
an easy to use, easy to maintain air purifying workhorse, the Austin
Healthmate is the best choice that won’t break the bank.
