We got an early start to the Winter Games!
Due to some snow and extremely slick and icy roads, orders are likely going to be delayed a day or two. With the National Guard out helping to rescue stranded motorists, and most of the region trying to thaw out, orders placed today will be processed and shipped within the next 1-2 days.

On a personal note, with the interstates effectively turned into icy parking lots and most of the side streets in and around the city of Atlanta doubling as bobsled runs, you sometimes have to make the best of tough situation. I was more fortunate than many of those, friends, coworkers and others, who were forced to spend the night in their vehicles, trapped by the ice and traffic. But I did want to take a moment to point out one of the benefits of working at

In the first month of 2014, a lot has already happened. Amongst the news about the "polar vortex" and political drama, my family and I will be welcoming a new family member! My older brother in Mexico City and his amor will be welcoming their first daughter this spring. This gives us some time to prepare for just about everything, from her name to what kind of baby shoes we get to dress her in! Being born in the spring and in the year of the horse, means that she will have strong leadership skills, passion, kindness, and great intelligence. She will also have gorgeous luscious hair, thanks to my mother.

So, what will we spoil her with? With Mexico City being located in the Valley of Mexico, the 3 mountain ranges that surround the valley trap all of the air pollution produced by the heavily populated city. With all of the ozone and nitrogen oxide pollutants, it seems like an air purifier would be the perfectly practical gift.

I like the Austin Air Baby's Breath, and here are three good reasons why.
  • Austin Air Baby's Breath HEPA Air PurifiersLow Maintenance Filters - Austin Air Purifiers have a great reputation for their low maintenance filters. The all-in-one filter only need to be changed every 3-5 years, which is a great feature because with a new born, this will be one less thing to worry about and one less credit card charge to have.
  • Excellent Pollution Filtration - The Baby’s Breath filters are great for particle and chemical absorption thanks to its medical grade HEPA filter and HEGA (High efficiency gas absorption) cloth carbon filter. This filter system will remove air borne particulates such as bacteria and viruses while absorbing VOCs and pollutants.
  • Quiet, But Not Silent - It’s hard to find peace and quiet in the hustle and bustle of a city. Though the Baby’s Breathe’s motor fan is insulated by the four layers of filter media, it does create a small amount of white noise which helps block out any city noise you may hear at night or during nap time. Do mother’s get a nap time too?
Next on the baby list, I want to make sure that my future niece is in an environment that is not dependent on harsh cleaning chemicals. Luckily, we have a variety of cleaning products that are plant based and will not cause allergic reactions or skin irritations.

EcoDiscoveries Natural Cleaners EcoDiscoveries Are Safe, Plant Based Green Cleanersare plant based cleaners that use enzymes to clean just about anything in your house. The surfactants, citric acid and soil emulsifiers are all plant derived ingredients used to keep your nursery safe and clean. With babies exploring and putting their mouths on just about everything and anything, you can have some peace of mind knowing that your baby isn’t licking up harsh chemicals.

A lot of thought went into the design of these mattresses. Cornered edges and welded (not sewn) seams provide comfort and an aesthetically pleasing design all while preventing dust mites and bacterial growth. Starlight support baby mattresses are waterproof, fire resistant, and hypoallergenic and are sized for bassinets, changing tables, cradles or cribs. For my new niece to get the best sleep, I’d opt for the Starlight Support Crib Mattress.

When my future niece is going out in the sun to play in any of Mexico City’s beautiful parks or on a beach vacation, she’s going to be using Vanicream Sunscreen. It’s a safe sunscreen for all ages, and has titanium oxide and since oxide as active ingredients. There are no harsh chemicals or allergy triggers like nickel or nut derivatives, and it’s water resistant for up to 80 minutes. Vanicream is great for young children and others with sensitive skin and those with eczema or any allergies to perfumes and preservatives. Vanicream specializes in a variety of products for people with sensitive skin, from shampoo and conditioner, soaps, bath oil and moisturizers.

So far I think this is a great starting point for a healthy newborn. I’ve taken care of the her nursery with clean air and plant based cleaners, and will also be able to keep her safe from too much sun with without worrying about preservatives, fragrances or other harsh chemicals common in sunscreen. Now I’m just counting down the days until my little niece gets here!

Wet Conditions Early, Making Cedar Pollen Season Miserable NowIt's winter time, and while many of us are struggling with bouts of bitter cold and snow, for some this is prime allergy season. It may seem counterintuitive for allergies, especially any type of pollen allergies, to be worse during the winter months, but one type in particular causes problems for many through the winter months. Making matters worse is that many mistake their allergies for a cold or the flu. (Like something out of an old comic strip, "Is it a cold? Is it the flu? No, it's cedar allergies!") So what's aggravating your allergies? If you live in the Southwest, it could very likely be cedar.

Cedar or mountain cedar pollen is actually a type of Juniper. These trees often soak up summer and fall rains then in December and January begin releasing pollen. With rains being heavier than usual throughout much of the South, the cedar pollen levels are higher than usual in places like North and Central Texas.

Like many allergies, cedar pollen can produce symptoms that are often mistaken for the cold or flu. Runny nose, headache, and sneezing are all common with cedar pollen allergies. While these often typify the common cold, check with your allergist or physician if these symptoms are persistent. For those thinking they have a touch of the flu, do you notice a fever or severe body aches? If neither of these are present, then you're likely dealing with a cold or allergies, not the flu.

Coping with cedar allergies can be a tough task, particularly with higher than usual pollen counts and winds spreading the allergen far and wide. One avoidance measure you can take is using an allergy mask. Thiscan help to block the pollen, and all masks do retain some heat, so during the colder winter months, they can also help cut down on cold weather induced asthma. Not many people have their windows open this time of year but think about replacing your HVAC filter. This can help to keep dust and pollen levels down in the home. Check with your allergist or doctor. If you've skipped by some preventative measures and find yourself feeling miserable, your doctor can help. From allergy shots to antihistamines, there are a variety of treatments available to help get you feeling better sooner.

New Reliable T3 Scrubbing Steam Mop Steam mops have been gaining popularity over the last several years as an alternative to the old bucket and mop that our parents and grandparents used. Given the ease-of-use, convenience and ability to deep clean without chemical odors and residues, it's not hard to see why! Reliable has a pair of steam mops, the tried and true T1 Steamboy and the newer, sweeper equipped T2, and now they've added the new T3 to their line of steam mops. What makes the T3 unique?

Reliable T3 PRO Steamboy Steam MopTo see why the T3 is unique to the Steamboy line, I first want to look at the other two models. The original Steamboy T1 is your general all-purpose steam mop. It produces steam quickly, is lightweight and compact. The T1 sanitizes while it cleans and come with microfiber drawstring cleaning cloth. All of those features make the T1 a solid steam mop. With the T2, you have steam mop capabilities but you also get an integrated sweeper to pick up large, visible particles like dirt and hair.

In terms of steam cleaning, the new Reliable T3 takes a step forward by featuring an integrated scrubber brush. Like the T1, there is large triangular steam cleaner head, but nestled inside of that is a bristle scrub brush. With the push of a foot pedal, the bristle brush emerges from the base, giving you the ability to scrub while you steam. This setup is ideal for use on tile in your bathroom and kitchen. Use steam and scrubbing bristles to loosen soil, grime and mildew then snap the scrubbing head back into the base and lift away the mess with the microfiber pad.

The cleaning path is just as wide as its predecessors, and all three models use a water filter to reduce scale. On a side note, one thing I liked about the T3 was with the shape of its cleaning head, the drawstring cloth of the T1 fits the new T3. Personally, I've tested and used several models with the microfiber pad and have always been partial to the cloths. They absorb better and seem to pick up debris more effectively than the pads.

If you're looking for an inexpensive steam mop that can provide you deep cleaning, scrubbing ability on tile and grout while sanitizing on across all smooth flooring types (and even freshen carpet), the new Reliable T3 PRO Steamboy is well worth considering.

Cold, cold, cold! That's what held a vise-like grip on most of the country this weekend/week. While some places did receive snow, in areas like Atlanta, it was just bitterly cold (no offense to people stuck dealing with negative temperatures). Like many people, I took a break from jogging outside and instead spent most of my evenings inside. For me it wasn't until this past weekend that it really set in - it was time to pull out the humidifier.

Many of you use humidifiers, and when the temperatures sink and the furnaces kick on, it's not hard to figure out why. Waking up with a sore throat or dry sinuses. Having perpetually chapped lips or dry spots on your skin no matter how much lotion you use. Sweeping and dusting, The New Pure Guardian H7550 Ultrasonic Humidifier sweeping and dusting, just to see a rainbow of dust illuminated by the light coming through the window. Not to mention houseplants that seem to turn to nothing more than sticks after a day without water.

It's on this note that I wanted to take a few minutes to mention a new humidifier we've added to our offering. As some may have noticed, the super-high capacity Pure Guardian H4500 and H4600 humidifiers have been discontinued. One of the models replacing these is the new Pure Guardian H7550 humidifier. Though it's not quite as large as H4000 series units, it makes up for it with some very unique and new features.

The new Pure Guardian H7550 humidifier is a dual mist, ultrasonic model. Unlike previous Pure Guardian and Germ Guardian models, this unit features a more modern, slick design with soft touch buttons and a crisp digital display. The performance of the H775 is very similar to other Pure Guardian models, and like the others, it has a blue nightlight that can be turned off. As mentioned though, the controls and the look are very different. You might also notice the tube sticking out of the top of this unit. There are two extension wands that fit where the output nozzle does. The mist travels up then out into the room, with the theory being the higher the moisture is dispersed, the more thorough and efficient humidification will be. H7550 Digital Control Panel There is a regular output nozzle that also comes with the unit in case the extension tubes aren't a route you want to go.

As you can see from the picture, the humidity is terrible low in our office. So for the time being, I think this model is likely to stay right where it is. However, we do have them in stock and ready to ship the same day. The price of the H7550 comes in near the H4000 models at $179.00.

Home humidifiers serve a variety of purpose during the winter. Not only do they put much needed moisture back into the air to relieve dry, itchy skin, but they can help reduce irritation from eczema and relief cold and flu symptoms. Putting the right amount of moisture back in the air can also help to reduce levels of airborne house dust and even make heating your home more efficient. So, while the weather is finally starting to warm, there are at least a few more months of winter ahead, which means more months of your furnace turning your indoor air into a desert wasteland. Taking a small step can sometimes make a big difference in how you feel.
