Woods Donates to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Asthma Initiatives

In the past we’ve mentioned how former NFL running back Ickey Woods & asthma are linked by the tragic story of his son, Jovante Woods. Since that time, Ickey has spent much of his energy raising money for asthma awareness and research through the Jovante Woods Foundation. This past Monday would have been his son’s 21st birthday, and to honor him, Ickey donated $100,000 to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

If you’re old enough, you may remember Woods from his NFL career in Cincinnati. Though cut short by injury, Woods was a hard running fullback who, in his rookie season, helped propel the Bengals through the playoffs and to their last Superbowl appearance in 1988. Again, in 1991, he was a part of the last Bengals team to win a playoff game.

More recently you may have noticed him in a series of Geico insurance commercials, displaying the “Ickey Shuffle”, a signature end zone dance from his playing days. Since 2010, Woods has been active in asthma awareness, speaking on the subject, raising money, and creating a scholarship in honor of his son.

Now, if only his beloved Bengals, could stop shooting themselves in the foot and win a playoff game. As a lifelong Steelers fan, but native Ohioan, I offer my regrets.
