Crane Germ Defense Humidifiers
What I like about the Crane Germ Defense Digital Humidifier
The output of the Crane Germ Defense is on par with models that are far more expensive. Depending on the conditions in your home, one tank of moisture can last for as long as three days. When running at full capacity, the Germ Defense can put about two and a half gallons of moisture back into the air over a 24 hour period.
Regardless of the temperature of water, when it is turned into a mist inside an ultrasonic humidifier, it loses heat. For many the cool mist is pleasant and just what is needed, but when the weather is cooler, this can work to reduce the temperature in the room. The pre-warm feature of the Germ Defense combats this by warming the water prior to misting. When the water does come out of the humidifier, it's about lukewarm. This helps to reduce the cooling effect ultrasonic humidifiers can have on a room while delivering soothing moisture.
The digital controls are a nice step up over the manual models. The LCD display gives you the ability to select a more specific humidity setting, which can eliminate the guesswork caused with manual control models. Additionally, you have three output levels, which gives you some ability to choose the rate of humidification.
The Crane Germ Defense humidifier is very easy to operate. Like other Crane humidifiers, the controls are easy to understand and simple to use. The only caveat to this is exception I note below. What I do not like about the Crane Germ Defense Digital Humidifier
The ionizer could have been left out. The actual functionality of it with an ultrasonic humidifier is a bit dubious at best. On the plus side though, it's optional, so you never have to use it.
The LCD display isn't quite as useful as I'd hoped. The way the timer operates on this model is unusual. I don't know if there simply wasn't a budget for a better LCD display, but a little math is required to use the timer feature on the Germ Defense. You press the timer button and combination of numbered lights will light up. Add the lit numbers, and that's how long the timer is set to run. And, while you can see what your humidity set point is, there's no integrated hygrometer to give you a reading of what current conditions are in the room.
Overall, the Germ Defense is a fairly priced model that offers some additional features not common with Crane humidifiers. The humidifying ability of this unit is in line with more expensive brands, but the warranty is fairly short. I would recommend this as an introductory style humidifier for someone who's new to ultrasonic humidifiers and not quite ready to take the plunge with a more expensive brand.
**As a side note, it's just my opinion but they should have named it the "Germ Defender" since after writing this review I had to go back and change where I wrote "Defender" back to Defense. Unfortunately, I had misnamed it, 8 times.
