    So far so good...
Reviewed by: Moisture woes! from Eugene, Oregon

I have used two other dehumidifiers in my daylight basement. Both failed compressor death after about 14 months of use. Neither unit responded to the % humidity set on the machine - both tried to turn my basement into a desert i.e. the selector was set to 45% but the units kept running taking the humidity below 35% - waste of energy!.
After several weeks of use, the Danby is keeping the humidity at 50% setting on the unit. However, the fan runs continually and I do not like the "noise" not really loud, just annoying when I am working in the basement. I am hoping this one lasts longer than the other two.

    Not what I expected....
Reviewed by: Big Mama from Northeast, USA

After reading reviews, I was looking forward to having a very quiet and efficient dehumifier. That is not the case, however. This is very loud - even on the lower fan setting. I also do not like the fact that when it is restarted after being off, it does not remember settings and the humidity level setting is high. I have renters who do not take the time to look at settings, thus the unit is not drawing out moisture from the area. The one plus is that this is the easiest "continuous drain" set up I've even seen on a dehumidifier and I've purchased many. Overall, very disappointed.

    Wet in the Northeast
Reviewed by: Mark G. from Maine

The 50 pint Danby worked great on drying out my downstairs. We have had a lot of rain up here this year. I own a two story home with a crawlspace and I have had trouble with wet spots and mold in the downstairs rooms. This took the moisture out over a couple of days. The only downfall I found it the fan does not shut off when the wanted humidity level is reached. Overall, I am happy with this dehumidifier, especially over others we researched. Pricing and free shipping were considerations as well.

Danby Dehumidifiers
The Danby line of Premeire dehumidifiers is possibly the best in the
business. The 50 pint Danby dehumidifier is a midrange model with a capacity suited for most rooms in your home including the basement.
After testing two different models at our facility, we were
impressed by the results.
What I liked about the Danby dehumidifiers
To put it in the most simple of terms, Danby dehumidifiers remove a large amount moisture
efficiently. Although both models were tested during the hot and humid
months of summer, we were surprised to find that over the course of
an eight hour period we had to empty the holding tanks of each three
times. Combined, the two models removed a total of 85.2 pints of
moisture from the air in our warehouse, the equivalent of over 10
gallons. Hopefully the conditions in which you use your Danby are not as
trying as our test conditions (approximately 89 degrees F. at 88-89% relative humidity), but
even if they are, the Danby 50 pint has shown itself up to the task.
Digital features and a remote are an advantage over other models. The built-in
humidistat is fairly accurate, showing between 3 and 5 points of deviation when compared to
an separate hygrometer. This dehumidifier will also display the current temperature, relative humidity in the room and allow you to
program it to run during certain times. The relative humidity set points range from 30 to 90% and can
be adjusted at intervals of 5%. The auto de-icer allows the unit to defrost when the coils freeze, and the auto restart function
comes in handy should you be in an area that experiences blackouts during the summer months.
Despite running non-stop during our testing periods, the Danby
models are all quiet for their size. Some may complain about the noise, but in
comparison to older models, the noise level is certainly an improvement. Additionally, the Danby
dehumidifiers are all Energy Star compliant and use less electricity
than most of their competitors.
All models also offer a direct drain line to save the irritation of
having to manually empty the tank. This is particularly useful
if you were using it in a basement or somewhere near your HVAC drain
line where you could effectively tie the 6.5 ft. of included drain hose into the
existing drain line. Regardless of whether you use it in your
basement or living room, the drain line saves the possible mess and hassle of repeatedly emptying the tank.
The tank or resevoir capacity for the Danby Premeire dehumidifiers is in line with comparable models. Holding nearly
two gallons, you will likely find yourself emptying the tank less often than other models.
What I did not like about the Danby dehumidifiers
Across the web you will find a lot of information showing these Danby models effective for extremely large areas. Literature
from Danby rates the Danby 50 as effective for up to 3000 sq. ft. However our tests and analyzation have found this to likely be more
than actual results. Across our site we have adjusted Danby coverage area by taking into account our product testing results and the CFM
(cubic feet per minute - fan speed) of individual models.
This unit is not light. Granted, the housing is fairly lightweight, but when you throw in the weight of the condensor, fan
and motor, the 50 pint becomes a little weighty. Casters alleviate this to some degree.
As with all dehumidifiers, the Danby dehumidifiers do produce some heat. The techonology behind traditional dehumidifiers warms the air
before it exits the machine. Though this will contribute to a warmer temperature in the space where you use the dehumidifier, this is done
so that the dry air exiting the machine can better capture more moisture (to be extracted as it runs through the dehumidifier).
Overall, the Danby Dehumidifier is one of the best residential dehumidifiers available, particularly for larger areas. Our test of the two of the
Danby models gave us excellent results with few drawbacks, and a
release of Consumer Reports only supports what we found. They ranked a Danby as its Best Buy for large capacity
dehumidifiers. For moisture removel in your home, the Danby 50 pint does not dissappoint.
