Friedrich P09B Portable Air Conditioner
The Friedrich P09B is a very solid and dependable portable air conditioner. As a dual hose portable air conditioner, you do have some added weight
over a comparable single hose model but this also means you have greater cooling efficiency since cooled air for your room isn't being diverted to
cool the motor and internal assembly. With what has become standard digital features and easy operation, the Friedrich P09B is an excellent
unit for most rooms in your home and works well in some office spaces, server rooms and home additions that lack central air.
What I liked about the Friedrich P09B
One of the best attributes of these two units is the dual
hose intake / exhaust set up. The hoses are very easy to retract and store and generally,
the additional hose translates into only very minimal additional setup. However, the benefits are more substantial. Instead of actually extracting
some of the air in the room and pushing it outdoors, the Friedrich P09B draws in outside to cool the unit itself. What this means for you is no negative air
pressure that is commonly associated with single hose portable air conditioners. So instead of creating an slight air pressure gradient where air
will seep in under doors and around windows, the P09B circulates all of the air it draws in from your room. Overall, this leads to
faster and more efficient cooling of any well insulated space.
During our testing, we ran this unit for several hours a day for about a week. The unit worked very well and you
could feel cold air from the unit almost to about 20 feet away. The unit did fill up with condensate water and eventually
automatically shut itself off, but we were in a large space with some outside air was circulating back into this particular test space.
The digital controls are simple and fairly straight forward, and the dehumidifier function is comparable to that of many
stand alone units, if not better. Not only does it cool but it also helps keep indoor humidity levels in check. This is particularly important allergy and asthma
sufferers who are trying to control mold and/or dust might growth in their homes.
What I did not like about the Friedrich P09B
One observation that we made is that the compressor is going to run within a few degrees of the temperature you set
for the unit. There is probably a 5 degree window, but this is not terrible different than comparable models.
With this model, as with all of the smaller models, you need to keep your space in mind. If you do not adequately match BTU's with the size and
additional heat sources in your space, you may find smaller portable air conditioners can not effectively cool your space. However, this is true
for all portable air conditioners.
While Friedrich has long been a name commonly associated with window air conditioners, they have used some of the same
technologies to develop these portable models. As backup units or as primary cooling units that can be moved from room to room, Friedrich Zoneaire portable
air conditioners like the P09B can provide you with long lasting cooling relief from hot, humid summer temperatures.
