Honeywell 50250 Air Purifier

As one of the largest and most popular air purifiers in the Honeywell air purifier line, the Honeywell 50250 air purifier is an inexpensive, but very effective air cleaner. With a large, true HEPA filter and activated carbon pre-filter, the 50250 captures submicron particles down to 0.3 microns in size while providing a basic level of smoke and odor control. For mild to moderate particle allergies, this HEPA air purifier will efficiently trap dust mite allergen, mold spores, pet dander, and other common particle allergens.

The long-lasting HEPA filter reduces your overall maintenance costs while a 360 degree intake/outflow promotes even circulation of purified air throughout your home. The Intelli-Check electronic filter indicator reminds you when to clean the HEPA filter and when to replace the carbon pre-filter. The Honeywell 50250 is effective for larger rooms up to 390 sq. ft.

Honeywell 50250 Air Purifier Product Features

  • True HEPA Filter captures at least 99.97% of mold spores, pet dander, dust mite allergen, pollen, and other airborne particles at 0.3 microns or larger.
  • Designed to be vacuumed only twice a year, the long-lasting HEPA Filter eliminates the need for monthly filter replacement.
  • Honeywell's glass-fiber HEPA filters are not treated with any chemicals.
  • An activated carbon pre-filter extends the life of the HEPA filter and has millions of tiny pores that trap unwanted odors and vapors.
  • Three different cleaning power levels.
Honeywell Enviracaire Assembly
  • Patented 360 intake and discharge of air ensures maximum air flow from anywhere in the room.
  • Patented technology electronically monitors the pre-filter and HEPA filter usage. It lets you know when its time to change the filters, so you don't have to worry about it.
  • Helps to reduce airborne bacteria and viruses.
  • Sleep mode feature for quiet operation.
  • Top handle grip make the lightweight air purifier easy to lift and carry.
  • Efficient in a room up to 375 square feet (for the Honeywell 50250 Enviracaire air purifier) or 300 square feet (for the Honeywell 50200 Enviracaire air purifier).

  four years and still going
Reviewed by: B. Keaton from Florence, KY

I'm not sure why other people have had any problems with this air purifier. I've had mine for over four years and haven't had any issues iwth it. During the days I run it on low and at night I turn it up to high. The house I live in is older and gets rather dusty, but i bought it after being diagnosed with COPD. It does help with the dust, but you need to clean the outside of it since I noticed dust build up from time to time. My only drawback with this has been the hepa filter. They don't make a full size replacement like what is in the machine and the replacements are stackable, smaller filters. They're shaped like filters that used to sit over top carburetors. I did replace the hepa filter after the 2nd year, but that was mainly b/c for the first several months of having it, I was trying to quit smoking. I noticed the filter itself had gotten a yellow hue to it tar, so eventually I did replace it. Other than that, I've had nothing but good come from having it in the house.

The plastic housing falls apart. This is the 3rd time I've bought these cheap models and each of them destroyed the plastic on the unit. Scary with what we know of ozone emissions. What else could make them literally disintegrate while sitting in place? Noisy on high at first but later not even a year, it is intolerable. Now, I will purchase a good unit that is not made in China. Plastic has never been healthy and China has taken it to a new level of fright for a chemically sensitive person. [Editor's Note: No Honeywell air purifiers produce any measurable amount of ozone, and the unit's are manufactured in Mexico.]

Customer Q & A

Q1: Does the Honeywell 50150 or 50250 produce any ozone I am looking for an air purifier that produces ZERO ozone not one the produce very little or complies with federal regulations I want one that produces absolutely zero ozone Thank You

A: If it has an electrical motor, or uses electricity, it produces ozone, period. Your refrigerator? Produces ozone. Cell phone, computer, microwave? Ozone, ozone, ozone. That being said, some devices produce no measurable amounts. Others produce amounts less than that of CARB or EPA regulations. Others still produce more than those limits. All of the air purifiers we offer, including the Honeywell 50250/50150 fall into the former, no measurable amounts or well below the CARB threshold of 0.050 ppm. For something that produces no ozone, it would literally have to lack any type of fan or motor. Hope that helps.

Q2: Can this used for cigarette smokers?

A: Yes, but. I've used the smaller model 50150, in a home with a smoker before. He smoked in the morning and evenings when he got home. The Honeywell ran 24/7, at higher speeds during the day when he was gone. While it didn't make that room smell like there was no one smoking in there, it did take much of the odor away by evening. The key is replacing that prefilter. It doesn't have much carbon, so it lasts only a few months before needing to be replaced, but it does help cut down on odors. If you really want to cut down on the odors, you're going to want to move to a unit that has several pounds of activated carbon Austin, AirPura, Amaircare, or NQ.

Q3: Can this machine go into a room as small as 14x14? Thank you

A: Yes. The only limitation with small rooms is just finding a place for it, since the it is about 18" across.

Honeywell Enviracaire Air Purifier Reviews

Honeywell  50250 Air Purifier

The Honeywell series of air purifiers are an economical choice that offer a range of capacities suited to meet the needs of most rooms in the average household. Offering excellent basic filtration with few frills, these units provide efficiency without busting your budget.

What I like about the Honeywell 50250 Air Purifier

Like all of the units in this line, the 50250 and 50200 are both compact and light. They are cylindrical in shape and draw air in from a 360 radius. A handle on top makes them easy to move, and because of their size, they will fit, unobtrusively, just about anywhere in the home.

They are simple and convenient to use and maintain. With a basic three speed control, Intelli-Check technology, sleep mode, and a long-lasting HEPA Filter, the 50250 and 50200 provide all the fundamentals of air filtration with no needless features. The Intelli-Check will keep you informed as to the performance of the filter and when each needs to be changed. The pre-filter generally needs to be changed once every three months. Simply unscrew the bottom, slide the HEPA filter out, unwrap the old pre-filter, then wrap the new one around the HEPA and reassemble. The HEPA filter can be cleaned and should last 3 years.

What I did not like about the Honeywell 50250 Air Purifier

All of the models in this line are a bit noisy. On low speed the noise is hardly noticeable, but at higher speeds the volume increases a good deal.

Overall, whether you choose any of the units in this series, you will be getting an air purifier that is inexpensive and low maintenance but one that offers fine results. Any of these units would work well for environments with low to medium levels of contaminants, including cigarette smoke, pollen, dust or pet dander. Those concerned with VOCs, high levels of pollutants, or someone with multiple pets should likely consider a different model.
