    Pollen and dust
Reviewed by: Dust and pollen sufferer from Zachary, La.

I suffered from sinus allergies each time I mowed my yard, due to the dusty conditions and the oak tree pollen. The 3M 6291 mask keeps both dust and pollen out. I also use it to cut lumber on my table saw to keep out sawdust. It works wonders, I couldn't even smell the cedar I was sawing.

    Great Mask!!!
Reviewed by: severe allergy sufferer from Fort Worth, Texas

My doctor told me that I would never be able to mow the lawn again because of how bad my allergies are so I followed his instructions for quite a few years. Then I was offered a job mowing 4-5 days a week that I couldn't pass up so I purchased this mask and I haven't had any problems with my allergies except when the dust gets in my eyes. It works great and I am able to mow 4-5 days a week and 8-9 hours each day without any problems! I definitely recommend this mask to anyone with allergies and who still needs to do lawn work.

    Review of Mask
Reviewed by: Ellen from Southern Coast of Oregon

I recently purchased a mask to use outside while I garden as I have allergies to mold and dust. This mask fits well, was easy to adjust to fit and did not slip around while using it. I had no adverse reactions like I would have experienced had I gardened without the mask.
I haven't tried using it in warm temperatures so cannot evaluate whether it would be comfortable in the heat.

Customer Q & A
Q1: I am looking for a allergy mask that I can wear while I am asleep at night time, do you have some product like this?
Thank
A: You're best bet is likely the Silk Comfort Mask. It's lightweight and easily allows air to pass. It won't offer as good of a seal around the face or the strict HEPA filtration as the 3M 6291, but it is far more comfortable, won't make your face as warm as the 3M respirator and the filtration will help reduce your exposure to common allergens.
Q2: Do you have a mask that will protect from DIRECT contact with smoke and heat from a wood burning stove. My husband religiously has to feed the fire that heats our house so he has direct contact with not only the smoke but the heat when he re-loads the woodburner.
A: Having grown up in a house where we heated almost exclusively with a wood stove, I can sympathize with your husband's situation. Even when the draft/vent is open you can still end up sucking down a lot of smoke. The best mask we offer for smoke filtration would likely be either the 3M 6291 or I Can Breathe Honeycomb carbon mask. With a thick rubber shell, the 3M mask will handle the heat better and the filtration overall is better since it meets true HEPA standards. I mention the Honeycombe Carbon mask because the activated carbon in the filter will trap smoke better since the carbon adsorbs certain odor and chemical particles. Neither one covers much more of the face than the other, so a singed eyebrow is still a possibility, though the honeycomb is thinner and probably less likely to shield as much of the heat. When stoking ours, I tried my best to keep my head turned, though that's not always possible, but make sure he has a thick pair of leather gloves handy that cover the wrist. I hope that helps.
Q3: I need a mask that will seal around the nose and is also comfortable to wear with glasses. I need a dust/pollen mask for household cleaning and yard work. What do you suggest?
A: The I Can Breathe masks fit well around the nose area and work best with glasses. For the tasks you laid out, the Honeycomb Carbon might be best. If you want to go with less expense, try the Allergzone Mask. It'll offer your basic filtration of dust, pollen, and other allergens. They're inexpensive and disposable. The 3M respirators work fine for all of these tasks and will give you many uses before you have to replace them or their filters. The drawbacks are that they are warmer and more expensive.

3M 6291 HEPA Mask
The 3M 6291 HEPA Mask is one my favorite face masks. Unlike disposable masks, the 6291 is durable and can be used repeatedly. I
have owned this mask for a several years, and have changed the
HEPA filter cartridges twice. I use this mask for just about everything from yard work to more heavy duty projects like
like replacing the grout in our shower. Depending on usage, you may have to replace the filters more often, so
this will vary depending on use. After several years of service, this my assessment of the 6291 respirator.
What I like about the 3M 6291 HEPA Mask
- Offers HEPA quality filtration of oil and non-oil based particles
- Versatile filtration ideal for a wide range of uses from pollen and mold particles while raking leaves to
filtering oil based particles you might encounter while staining or working with wood or fiberglass while renovating or
working on your home
- Creates a very tight seal
- It is durable and easy to clean after dirty projects - rinse respirator itself with warm water or with a mild detergent (filters NOT washable)
- Fits very snugly with two straps and is fully adjustable
What I did not like about the 3M 6291 HEPA Mask
- As with any tight sealing mask, in warm conditions it will make the area around my mouth sweat, so some
moisture will get trapped inside
In all, the 3M 6291 HEPA Mask is the best masks we offer. With NIOSH P100 filtration, this respirator is one of the most versatile available today.
It is completely sealed, non latex, HEPA grade, and you can replace the filters when necessary. If you, have allergies, do a lot of yard
work, work in a shop or in places where things toxic and non-toxic particles are a concern, I strongly suggest using this mask.
The filtration this mask provides also exceeds the CDC's recommended filtration level (N95) to help prevent the spread of the
influenza virus. Aside from it being a little warm with extended use or in warm conditions, there is very little not to like about this
durable HEPA respirator.
