The
Miele Callisto S5280 emerged as the most popular Miele canister
vacuum. The vacuum offers the conveniences of the S4 Galaxy series
with a few notable improvements. The Callisto is bigger and more
powerful than the S4 series vacuums. It is equipped with the
electrically powered SEB 217-3 Power Brush. This attachment is a
significant improvement over the air driven brush of the Galaxy
series. In addition, the Callisto comes with a powered hose embedded
inside the wand. This hose gives you a wider range of cleaning
options and attachments without the inevitable snagging of an
exposed cord.
When I tested this model, I found the
SEB 217-3 Power Brush able to
extract pet hair from thick carpet. Another noticeable upgrade on
the Callisto that impressed our staff is the handle assembly. The
Callisto is equipped with a deluxe ergonomic handle. The design fits
perfectly in your hand, and it puts less strain on your wrist while
you vacuum. The handle attaches to a telescopic wand that extends in
two sections. With the added length, you can reach the uppermost
nooks and crannies of your home.
Coming in second in our survey was the
Miele Capricorn S5980. For
allergy and asthma sufferers, the Capricorn S5980 is an ideal vacuum
cleaner. The vacuum comes with an Active HEPA filter. The filter not
only captures and retains lung-damaging particles, like dust mite
feces and pollen, but it also uses charcoal to capture odors.
Working with the filter system, the Sealed System canister
construction does not allow allergens to leak back out into the air.
The Capricorn’s combination of these two systems improves indoor air
quality and helps allergy sufferers avoid allergy triggers.
In a room filled with vacuums, you can spot a Miele right away
because of its distinct handle. The Capricorn has the deluxe
ergonomic handle with suction and powerbrush control. With fingertip access, you can
turn the vacuum on and off; and you have the ability to adjust the
power of the motor. You easily can go from cleaning lamp shades to
curtains to blinds. Use the included dusting brush attachment and
throw away your traditional dust cloths!
The Capricorn comes with the standard canister features that
separate Miele from their competition. The cord length is almost 30
feet. With that operating radius, the Capricorn easily cleans a
whole room. The filter change and dust bag change indicator lights
inform you when to replace them. If you live in a smaller space, the
Capricorn has cool storage features. The vacuum's mini attachments fit
inside the canister, and the canister body has a space saving
storage bracket for the wand.
Placing third in our achoo! Allergy staff poll was the
Miele Antares
S4210. If you want a great vacuum at a great price and you do not
have wall-to-wall carpeting, the Antares is the best introductory
canister vacuum. One great quality of the Antares is its
adaptability. Right out of the box, the Antares can vacuum rugs and
low to medium pile carpet. With a quick change of attachments,
the vacuum can take on hardwood flooring and tile.
The cost efficient Antares is equipped with all of the attention to
detail that sets Miele vacuums apart from their competition.
However, you are able to use the vacuum and to determine how you
want to upgrade the machine. If needed, you can add a
HEPA filter.
The only drawback of the Antares is that it is not particularly suited to handle
deep pile or thick carpeting. The Antares is a great entry level
vacuum for first time canister buyers. Its vibrant mango red color
is a very strong selling point. |
