Miele RX1 Scout Robot Vacuum Cleaner
A robotic vacuum that quietly moves through your home isn't an entirely new concept, but a Miele that takes care of daily cleaning of all of your floors in a more thorough way than any comparable robotic vac is! This is exactly what you get with the New Miele RX1 Scout vacuum cleaner. With patented Smart Navigation and Triple Cleaning system, the Miele Scout cleans your entire floor without missing spots like other robotic units. Sleek and stylish, this truly unique companion can gently clean for up to two straight hours before automatically returning to its charging station to power back up, and with four cleaning modes and a remote control you have as much or as little control as you want!
Two soft bristle brushes clean corners and edge, while a turbobrush hidden away under the Scout picks up both large particles and even fine dirt and pet hair. With seven anti-collision sensors, the Miele Scout can navigate your home or apartment and avoid steps, furniture, and other obstacles as it cleans. With all of its advanced controls and low 3.5" height, there's never any worry of it scuffing delicate furnishings or even running out of power. This completely self-contained unit does not replace a weekly, thorough cleaning of your floors, but for pet owners, those with low pile carpet or smooth floors, the Scout offers a convenient way to maintain a healthier home with almost no effort.
- Ideal for smooth floors but works well on low pile carpet and can transition between flooring up to approximately 3/4" in. height difference (0.78" exact). This allows it to navigate across different flooring types in your home.
- Long-life, lithium ion battery provides up to 2 hours of cleaning power, that's 1600 sq. ft. per charge.
- As the first part of the Triple Cleaning System a pair of soft bristle brushes reaches and pulls in dirt and debris, allowing the Scout to effectively cleaning along edges and in corners.
- An integrated turbobrush is ideal for removing ground in dirt and soil from low pile carpet and high efficiency suction vacuums up debris into a 2.4 cup dustbin.
- LCD Display provides current time, battery charge status, and lets you know mode your Scout is currently operating in.
- Seven integrated anti-collision sensors ensure that the Scout avoids steps, walls, and your furniture, and as an extra precaution the Miele RX1 comes equipped with a non-marking rubber bumper.
- The Miele Scout uses a patented Smart Navigation system, ensuring maximum cleaning.
- Unlike the "chaos navigation" systems of most robot vacuum cleaners, the Scout uses an array of sensors, gyro Sensor, and ceiling camerato track its cleaning path in your home, meaning it won't miss a spot and won't cover areas it has already cleaned.
- The Gyro Sensor even allows for the Scout to operate in the dark and under furniture.
- Automatic Cleaning Mode: Cleans all floors (up to 1600 sq. ft. total) before returning to its base to recharge.
- Corner Mode: Goes through Automatic Cleaning Mode then cleans all corners before returning to its base.

Miele Scout RX1 Vacuum Cleaner
Robotic vacuums have been slowly gaining traction in the U.S., and for most people, the thought of not having to vacuum again or have your floors cleaned while you're away from the house is appealing. Yet, the fact remains that for all the automatic vacuum cleaners on the market, few live up to the hype. Still, there are a variety of advantages to using a robot vacuum, and taking all of these things, and more, into consideration, Miele has developed the Miele RX1 Scout robot vacuum cleaner.
While it looks similar in style and function to current models on the market, there are a few unique features that make the Miele one of your best choices for an automatic vac that is more than a unique gift for you Uncle Bob and actually independently and thoroughly cleans a wide variety of flooring types. After seeing one in action and getting the opportunity to test the Scout, this is what I found.
What I like about the Miele Scout Vacuum
At first glance, the Miele Scout catches your eye. The high gloss, reflective finish on the top really makes the Scout stand out, and the two long bristle brushes in the front remind me of two tiny robot arms or feelers. These do, however, serve a very practical purpose as they provide the reach to clean even in recessed areas and in corners while widening the cleaning path to the full width of Scout. The well-lit LCD display on the top is clear and easy to read. At less than 4 lbs. and not much larger than an average home scale, the RX1 is a very compact machine. Overall, I really like the look of the Scout. It's clean, modern, and sleek.
Using the Miele RX1 was pretty straightforward. Despite what seems to be an overly complicated user manual, after you attach the Scout's brushes, plug in the docking station, power up the remote, and flip the On/Off switch on the Scout, controlling this robotic vac is really easy. Most people will use the Scout in Automatic Mode. When set to Auto, the Scout will automatically leave the charging dock and begin sweeping your floors. It will cover up to 1600 sq. ft. on a single, full charge. Each charge will last about two hours and takes just under two hours to fully recharge. Once it is finished or runs low on power, it will automatically return to the charging station and power itself down while it recharges the lithium battery.
While looking over the Scout, there were two additional features that struck me. First, the Scout does have a filter. It's not the standard Miele HEPA filter, but instead the AirClean filter. So while it lacks full HEPA filtration, it will trap 99.95% of particles. 0.5 microns or larger. This is particularly useful for anyone with allergies or pets. Secondly, instead of the standard Miele dustbag, the nifty little Scout uses a collection bin. Granted, it's not as hygienic for those with allergies as the dustbags are, but it easy to empty and actually holds about two cups worth of debris. Besides, there really isn't room for bag in this model, and this saves money on replacements.
To my surprise, the Miele Scout actually performed much better than I expected on carpeted surfaces. While there is no doubt that on smooth flooring like tile, linoleum, laminate, hardwood and stone, the Scout glides right along, but on carpet, other robotic vacuums often bog down or get stuck. The Scout worked just fine on low pile and even medium pile carpet. It crawls right over rugs, gently sweeping as it goes.
In terms of actual cleaning ability, again, the Scout surprised me a bit. First, it's very thorough. If you're familiar with robotic vacuums currently available, then you may have noticed that they tend to bump and bumble around like a lost puppy dog. This is because they use a "chaos navigation" style, which is to say the vacuum will move in one direction until something impedes its progress at which point it will randomly rotate and head off in another direction. The Miele Scout greatly improves on this. Instead of randomly cleaning the Scout uses a systematic approach to ensure that ALL of your flooring is swept, and in doing so, it won't miss spots or re-clean the same area (two things common with chaos navigation). Instead, the RX1 uses a ceiling camera and array of sensors to map your floor and more importantly, its position on your floor. This intelligent design means the entire floor is cleaned, eliminating time, redundancy, and inefficiency.
Similar to other robotic vacuums, this Miele robovac is fairly quiet. You do hear the whirl of the turbobrush, which is situated in the belly of this little beast, and the suction does produce some noise. The overall sound level of the Scout, though, is pretty quiet. You're not really going to notice it much if you're in another room, and it is certainly not loud enough to disrupt phone calls. You might have to turn the TV up a little as it works around your feet, but in general, the Scout shouldn't disturb you much.
The remote is handy. You set your modes, the clock, or tell the Scout to return to the charging base from here. This also gives you the ability to set a timer for the Scout and switch to some of the Scout's other cleaning modes, Corner, Spot and Turbo. There are descriptions of each of these above in the Features section.
There are two other things worth mentioning. First, the pint-sized Scout can and will romp over rugs and thresholds between rooms. In general, if the height difference between the flooring its scooting around on and the surface its approaching is 3/4" or less, it will dutifully trudge right along. Second, if there are areas where you don't want the Scout to clean you do have a way to prevent it from cleaning certain areas. Say you have a particularly delicate rug or section of your floor that has been refinished or even new tile, there are magnetic strips that you can purchase to lay on the floor or place under the rug that the Scout will sense and treat the same as it would a wall or furniture. This allows you to confine the Scout's operation to a specific room, set of rooms or area within a room.
What I do not like about Miele Scout Vacuum
This isn't so much of a drawback as it is a bit about what the Scout is and is not. The Miele RX1 Scout vacuum IS NOT a deep cleaner. A regular Miele upright or canister has a more powerful motor and suction to provide the deep cleaning results that your home needs. The Scout IS a great maintenance vacuum. It merrily strolls along day after day picking up pet hair, visible debris and even filters out some particles that you can't see to maintain a healthier home in between deep cleanings.
The price tag on this vacuum might be a bit high for some, but maintenance costs are low. The battery is expected to last five years before needing to be replaced. AirClean filters are inexpensive and there are no dustbags. So yes, you will pay more on the front end, but upkeep is low and expected use life is around ten years.
Overall, I really liked the Miele RX1 Scout vacuum cleaner. From the unique look and design to the versatile cleaning ability and advanced navigation, controls and features, the Scout impressed me! While I would caution people not to throw away their regular vacuum for a Scout, the RX1 does make an excellent addition to any home. For me in particular, this model would be ideal. I generally spend 4 nights a week running a dust mop over my floors. They are all smooth, and while I love my dog, I hate the shedding. So in my situation, a Scout is the ideal way remove dog hair daily without simply pushing it into a pile with a dust mop. Plus, the Scout looks really neat scooting across the floor, and it is something that can really add a finishing touch to a modern styled home. It also makes a good gift for that hard to buy for friend/family member or for the gadget-person in your life.
