and underneath almost any type of furniture.
Automatic Feature By monitoring the air pressure at the floor tool, the Automatic Suction Control on the Miele S8 UniQ
automatically adjusts the suction to the type of flooring you cleaning. For carpet the suction level lowers to allow for smooth movement

A: No. Some of the older Miele models used to have this type of capability, but over time, Miele ped that feature in favor of placing more emphasis on filtration and suction.

After years of development, Miele has designed a vacuum cleaner line that they feel can surpass the quality, performance and popularity
of the S5 canisters. Building upon that foundation, the Miele S8 vacuums offer unique enhancements and features that work to surpass their high standards.
As the flagship model of this new line, the Miele UniQ displays the very best that Miele has to offer in a vacuum cleaner. With our demo model
in hand, we set about testing this S8 and breaking down what truly makes this vacuum -
"unique".
What I like about the Miele UniQ S8
Grade: A+
Performance - With a 1200W workhorse powering the UniQ, there is no lack
of suction. Other brands try to
differentiate themselves with brand specific categorizations, but the Vortex motor has proven itself to be unmatched. On smooth flooring, the
Parquet Tool is both gentle enough for softer flooring but stout enough to dislodge debris. The SEB 236 continues to be one of the best all round tools for carpet. LED lights illuminate your cleaning path, while an
independent motor powers a brushroll that cleans deep. A height adjustment pedal and fingertip brushroll control allow for an on-the-fly transition across
multiple types of flooring. On thicker carpet like Saxony or Frieze, the SEB 236 will restore matted or crushed fibers, remove loose
fiber and debris. I dropped the height of the brushroll down, and the 236 worked great for removing pet hair and dirt from low pile Berber. In the
kitchen and dining room, the Parquet tool cleaned with ease, rolled along smoothly, and allowed for the suction to really pull debris from edges and
underneath things like the stove and refrigerator.
Grade: A+
Filtration - Independently certified and conforming to rigid EU filtration guidelines, Miele's AirClean System is the best
filtration available today. This isn't as surprising when you consider Miele was the first to offer a HEPA certified vacuum cleaner. This is, however, an
understated and often overlooked benefit for allergy and asthma sufferers. As air enters the UniQ, the 9-ply
dustbag filters smaller and smaller particles, up to 99% of all particles that enter. After passing through a pre-motor filter, the air then travels through
the HEPA filter and a layer of Generally Activated Charcoal. This eliminates allergens like dander, pollen and the most damaging particles in the air you
breath. The end result is air that filters out 99.99% of particles 0.3 microns or larger. The thin layer of charcoal removes nuisance odors, and ultimately,
the AirClean System improves your Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) while cleaning your floors.
Grade: A+
Control - One of the biggest complaints with many vacuums is having to bend down each time you want to adjust suction. Ditching the rotary dial controls, the Miele UniQ allows you to control
everything from your fingertips or with your foot. Vacuuming the carpet in the bedroom and don't feel like switching floor tools to clean
the tile in the master bath? No problem, flip the brushroll
off (via the handle) and use straight suction only.
Vacuuming a rug? Again, simply adjust the suction down
on the handle and you're all set. On the canister, there is a one-touch cord rewind
button. Simply press it once when
you're finished and it automatically retracts the cord. If you want to take some of the guesswork out of suction while saving money, set the UniQ to Automatic. This setting adjusts suction
levels to use only the power needed to clean the particular surface you are on at the time.
Grade: A
Manueverability - Miele's patented 360° casters allow for smooth, even movement around the house. The canister glides across linoleum and hardwoods,
while quietly following you as you clean across carpet. A cord that is 3' longer than S5 models gives you even more cleaning reach throughout your home (1 outlet change to clean my entire
ranch style home from end to end). The handle is largely as it was with S5 models.
It fits well in your hand and reduces strain. Across the board, all Miele components
are built to glide, swivel, bend and turn with ease.
Grade: A+
Luxury - Fancy is a bit of an understatement when it comes to the UniQ. Miele took
several queues from high end autos to give the UniQ a sleek style and feel that is all its own. From the deep, metallic finish and true chrome accents,
to the raised chrome Miele logo and LED park and underbody lights, the influence of modern luxury automobiles, like Mercedes, is fairly evident. Miele has
always been one to put the "luxury" in term "luxury home appliance". (As a side note, this made me feel a little bad as it bounced
off tables, chairs and other furniture in my home.)
Grade: A+
Sound - I remember having to yell to my mother when she was running her old Eureka. Miele broke new ground with S7 uprights by producing
a vacuum that was quiet enough to hear the phone ring, a knock at the door, or your child asking for a juice box. The UniQ is one of the quietest vacuums ever
produced. Thanks to an encased motor and insulation, Miele was able to further reduce noise with this model to create a vacuum that doesn't even sound
like a vacuum!
Grade: A+
Odds and Ends - Each Miele UniQ is tested before it leaves the factory to ensure that when it arrives to you, it performs exactly as it should.
A new velvet covered 3D bumper protects the vacuum as well as your furniture from the inevitable bangs and collisions while cleaning. From the durable ABS shell that withstood my downright abuse in testing to a hose that I literally put four knots in (just to ensure it would bounce back to its original
shape), the new Miele UniQ not only performs and looks great doing it, but it lasts. To back this up, Miele has offered the longest warranty ever on this model -
a full 10 Year Warranty on the motor and 5 Year Warranty on parts and labor. That type of confidence and peace of mind is years ahead of the rest of the industry.
What I do not like about the Miele UniQ S8
Price - There is really no getting around it, price will be the biggest drawback for most people when it comes to the Miele UniQ. This combination of
performance and luxury has a price, and that is $1499. Granted, you get a great deal for that price, and ultimately you get a vacuum that is tested to last 20 years. Think about it like this. If the UniQ lasted you 20 years, it would mean your initial cost is only $75 a year. So when you put it in perspective and view it as something you're making a
20 year investment in, it makes it a bit easier to justify.
Choice - The Capricorn was the top of the Miele S5 line and with it, you had a choice in which powerhead you wanted. With the UniQ, that option goes away.
While the 217-3 is smaller and not as effective on high pile or very thick carpet, the option to choose the smaller tool at a reduced price, was attractive to some. However, with
the UniQ being quite possibly the best vacuum Miele has ever designed, I can see the side of not wanting to offer a less effective carpet tool. You pay for the best, and you get the best, regardless of flooring type.
The various influences Miele had in creating the S8 line and the UniQ come together to create a stylish, top-performing vacuum cleaner. No matter your cleaning task, the UniQ is
perfectly suited to deliver the results you demand. The filtration is the best in the world, and the quality and durability of the UniQ cannot be found
with any other canister vacuum cleaner. A sleek, well appointed design perfectly compliments the core cleaning ability, while intelligent controls and superior components
make this Miele S8 the most hygienic, effective and truly UniQ vacuum available today.
