If you get a prescription or note from your doctor, your insurance company may reimburse you for your purchase. In most cases, the patient must present a receipt of the purchase along with a Medical Necessity Form. Check with your insurance provider to determine your options.
Similarly, if you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), you can use it to pay for your Tempur-Pedic® mattress, provided that you have a doctor's prescription. Most plans also cover The NeckPillow by Tempur-Pedic™.
Once a medical necessity has been established, you can then determine how much of the mattress needs to be funded. For example, say a patient decides that the mattress that he or she needs will cost $1200. The patient puts $100 pre-tax, per month, into the FSA or HSA account. When the account reaches $1200, the amount can be withdrawn and the mattress can be purchased. If the patient is in the 28% tax bracket and the state tax rate is 5%, then he or she would have saved $600.
Note: See IRS Publication 502 regarding Personal Use Items: You cannot include in medical expenses the cost of an item ordinarily used for personal, living, or family purposes unless it is used primarily to prevent or alleviate a physical or mental defect or illness. For example, the cost of a toothbrush and toothpaste is a nondeductible personal expense. Where an item purchased in a special form primarily to alleviate a physical defect is one that in normal form is ordinarily used for personal, living, or family purposes, the excess of the cost of the special form over the cost of the normal form is a medical expense. It is difficult to figure the cost of a traditional mattress, since there is a large range of products.
