Tempur-Pedic® Pressure Management & Wound Care

Tempur-Pedic® mattresses have been in use for wound care throughout the U.S. and Europe since the early 1990s. They have been clinically proven to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers more effectively than foam mattresses and even more effectively than alternating pressure surfaces. Published medical research confirms that TEMPUR® provides an environment conducive to healing wounds. TEMPUR® material is better than foam and better than air because it has fluid properties. These properties cause the mattress to not only immerse the patient but to envelop them, molding to their individual shape, with no maintenance.

Tempur-Pedic® & Back Pain

A 2007 study by researchers at Bridgeport Hospital of Yale New Haven Health showed that, compared to traditional inner spring mattresses, Tempur-Pedic® mattresses improve sleep and provide back pain relief. Other studies have disproved the conventional wisdom that those with chronic back pain should sleep on a very firm mattress; this is not the case. A 2003 study published in the journal Lancet showed that a mattress of medium firmness improves pain and disability among patients with chronic lower back pain.

Tempur-Pedic® & Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder syndrome characterized by musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points (tenderness that occurs in precise, localized areas, particularly in the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips). People with fibromyalgia frequently experience anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, sleep disturbances, awakening with stiffness, and other symptoms. Fibromyalgia affects 3 to 6 million Americans, according to the American College of Rheumatology. It is most often observed in women of childbearing age; however, men, children, and the elderly are not immune. Because of its debilitating nature, fibromyalgia has a serious impact on patients’ families, friends and employers, as well as society at large.

Insomnia is a frequent complaint of individuals with fibromyalgia. They report difficulty in falling asleep - and when they do, sleep is often disturbed because of chronic pain. A recent study showed that a Tempur-Pedic® mattress improves sleep quality, duration of sleep, and reduction of pain levels among patients with fibromyalgia - without the side effects of heavy medication.

Tempur-Pedic® & Pregnancy

A 2006 study by Preston-Osborne Research proved that pregnant women who sleep on a Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress™ fall asleep faster, sleep longer, and feel more rested in the morning. Ninety-five percent of study participants reported improved sleep on The DeluxeBed by Tempur-Pedic™.

The women who participated in the study were entering or near the beginning of their third trimester and slept on innerspring mattresses prior to the study. The women were 40 years of age or younger, had experienced sleep discomfort due to pregnancy, and were not considered by their physicians to be at significant high-risk for pre-term labor. They kept sleep journals detailing the effectiveness of the mattress in aiding onset to sleep and sleep comfort.

Tempur-Pedic® beds are temperature sensitive, breathable, and viscoelastic. These properties enable this material to remain firm where needed and soft where desired, creating a custom fit for each individual. Through the use of weight and heat to distribute pressure over the entire surface, the bed automatically adjusts to body size and provides body-contouring support for a restful night’s sleep.

Tempur-Pedic® & Alzheimer's

Another 2006 study showed that Tempur-Pedic mattresses reduce agitation among Alzheimer's patients. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, behavioral symptoms such as agitation and sleep disturbances are among the most challenging effects of the disease and are a major factor in deciding to place a loved one in residential care such as a nursing home. Although the research is ongoing, these important early results indicate that Tempur-Pedic® mattresses may improve the quality of life of Alzheimer’s residents in nursing homes by improving sleep and reducing levels of agitation.

Snoring is a respiratory disorder that disturbs the sleep of snorers and their partners. If left unchecked, snoring may lead to sleep apnea, a serious condition that's associated with allergies.

A sleep study by the Preston-Osborne Research Group showed:

73% of bedmates reported that the volume of their partner's snoring decreased during the test period.
