This certified organic mattress features a six-inch chemical-free natural latex core, plus a softer, three-inch natural latex topper. Both layers are covered by organic cotton fabric and quilted with wool from organically raised sheep. The quilting prevents shifting and provides a sturdy surface, and the latex core conforms to your body's shape; it does not create pressure points because it does not contain metal springs. Best of all, the mattress is chemical-free and naturally hypoallergenic.
Choose Your Mattress Firmness
Available in medium, firm, and extra firm:
Medium: Recommended for small children up to 80 pounds.
Firm: The most popular choice.
Extra Firm: For those who like a firm mattress or weigh over 300 pounds.
If you like an extremely soft mattress, add a natural latex mattress pad for cushiony comfort.
A Naturally Hypoallergenic Mattress
The natural latex in this mattress has been tested by Latexco and certified chemical-free. The natural latex (or natural rubber) not only absorbs motion so that two people can sleep side-by-side undisturbed, but it's also resistant to dust mites. Dust mites cannot live inside natural rubber!
Wool is nature's ideal bedding material. It is naturally hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, and resistant to dust mites and bed bugs, thanks to a substance known as lanolin (which protects sheep, too, and helps them stay dry). Wool is also naturally flame resistant, and it absorbs moisture very efficiently. This is important for allergy sufferers because moist, humid conditions encourage the growth of bacteria, mold, and dust mites. Wool can take in up to 30 percent of its weight in moisture. Synthetic fibers, on the other hand, can hold as little as two percent.
A Chemical-Free Sleep Experience
The primary chemical used as a flame retardant in standard mattresses in boric acid, a poisonous pesticide. The EPA and CDC warn that it can cause reproductive, developmental, and neurological damage. This dangerous chemical is going into mattresses, where it can be absorbed by the skin! If your mattress tag reads "treated cotton," then it's likely treated with boric acid. Boric acid is also a known respiratory irritant and has been shown to reduce sexual activity and sperm counts. Conventional mattresses may also contain antimony, formaldehyde, silicon, benzene, toluene, phthalates, chlorine, and ammonium polyphosphate – all dangerous chemicals that can irritate allergies and lead to chemical sensitivity. In fact, many experts believe that environmental toxins in the home are to blame for the increases in allergies and asthma as well as other diseases like ADD, autism, and cancer.
A Certified Organic & NAOMI-Compliant Mattress
Our certified organic mattresses are NAOMI-compliant. NAOMI stands for the National Association of Organic Mattress Industry. In the past decade, safety regulations for consumer products have become unreliable. For example, children have been exposed to lead paint from toys manufactured in China, and puppies have been exposed to poisonous dog food.
Our certified organic mattresses are made in the USA and comply with NAOMI standards. By complying with NAOMI standards, we are trying to make it easier for you to know what you are buying. Some "organic" mattresses do not meet NAOMI standards and would be better described as "natural." NAOMI standards protect you from end products that may not be as pure as advertisements claim.
Here are the standards for NAOMI manufacturers:
- Must be free of synthetic fabrics.
- Fabrics may not be treated with any chemicals suspected of being toxic, even at low levels.
- All wool must be from sheep raised according to organic standards.
- Wool must be processed according to organic standards and be free of polyester fibers. This requires that the wool is processed at a facility that does not process polyester or chemically laden cotton batting.
- Any wool used must be tested free of arsenic and lead.
- All inner, hidden fabrics and fibers, must be certified according to GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards).
- All cotton batting used must be certified organic and processed according to GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards).
- Any other natural fibers used must be certified organic (cotton, silk, etc.).
- Fibers used must also be processed according to GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards); no chemical processing allowed.
- Any rubber used must be tested free of benzene, toluene, pthalates, SBR, petroleum additives, formaldehyde, arsenic, lead at under .001 ppm.
- Any glue used must be free of formaldehyde, phenolated compounds and must be disclosed.
* The only exceptions are: thread & metal springs as these have no certifications in the works anywhere in the world.
