Portable air conditioners are a great way to beat the summer heat in spaces and rooms where central air and window air
conditioners are not an option. There are a variety of sizes and styles to choose from, but the most basic way to begin narrowing your search is to
determine the size of the space where you will be using the unit. You will also need to assess any additional sources of heat like a stove, dryer or another
home appliance that generally gives off larger amounts of heat as well as how many people generally occupy the room.
For 10,000 BTU air conditioners or less, your maximum room size will
be approximately 250 sq. ft. Again, this will vary depending on what story the room is on, how many people generally occupy the room, whether this room is
shaded or sunny and if there are any large heat producing appliances in the space. But in most instances you can efficiently cool a room of
this size with an 10,000 BTU portable air conditioner. If the BTU rating is lower, the coverage area will decrease accordingly. So for an 8,000 BTU portable
air conditioner you can effectively cool a space of about 200 sq. ft. There is one exception in this
category. While the Friedrich Kuhl is a 9,000 BTU air conditioner, it
is a window unit. Window and HVAC units are somewhat more efficient than a standard portable air conditioner, so the coverage area for this model is going to be
greater, about 400 sq. ft. maximum.
