Dr. Oz Demonstrates Neti Pot on Oprah

Narial Nasal CupPeople have been using neti pots to wash out their noses for thousands of years, Dr. Mehmet Oz tells the audience on Oprah.

Warm water from the neti pot stimulates sinuses and clears out mucus.

NeilMed NasaFlo Neti Pot Kit"A lot of folks that have allergies, who have sinusitis, that have conditions that we treat with medications are equally well treated by actually washing the areas of your body," says Dr. Oz. "When you think about it … you wash your underarms. You have bidets. Why wouldn't you wash a pretty important part of your body, your sinuses, in the same fashion?"

Oprah invited an audience member up on stage to demonstrate the neti pot. "I thought it would feel like drowning, but it feels good," says the audience member.

"You never want to wash [human] tissue without having saltwater in [the neti pot]," cautions Dr. Oz. "Your own cells like it more."

"The doctors who are specialists in this area will often say this is a better treatment than a lot of the other drugs that we try to offer folks, because it mechanically cleans out the problem," concludes Dr. Oz.

6 years ago I had a rhino plasty (nose surgery) and was told by my doctor to regularly use the saline solution (1l boiled water, cooled to warm+1tsp non-iodized salt+1/2tsp baking soda. I was using it regularly myself and for my kids as a nasal spray when they had stuffy noses, and during winter time every night before sleep. As I had recommended it to many people, those who dared to try were so grateful. It doesn't have to be used with a special pot, but ordinary spray bottle. My doctor told me to do it over the sink like this: Bending your head slightly backward, spray solution into each nostril 2-3 times quickly or one at the time. Then, turn your head down, and as the solution pours out from your nose into the sink you should inhale those little drops. You can do it as many times as you feel comfortable and you'll see the benefits immediately.

I enjoyed reading your article on allergies. I have horrible allergies and they used to prevent me from doing any outdoor work. Recently my doctor recommended Nasopure, a nose wash. It has helped me greatly and i am now a daily user. It helped shrink swollen membranes and thinned thick mucus in my nasal passages. I haven’t had to spend a nickel on allergy medications since. Their website was very informative too. I would recommend Nasopure to anyone with a nose, especially one with allergies

Rubbing alcohol etc will not help. I'm not sure a neti pot will either. It sounds like ETD Eustachian tube dysfunction. The tube runs from the back of the nose to the middle ear and normally opens for a few seconds when we yawn or swallow to allow drainage of any secretions from the middle ear. If you have a cold or allergy anything that causes swelling in the nose or throat the eustachian tube can get blocked so fluid can't drain away from the middle ear. Consequently you get hearing loss, sometimes tinnitus ringing in the ear and the squishy sound you describe. If the infection is viral like a cold antibiotics are useless. You could get an antihistamine from a pharmacy take advice because some antihistamines cause drowsiness. Decongestants might help. Again speak to a pharmacist. You can try again to forcibly open the Eustachian tube by taking a deep breath and blowing while pinching your nostrils and closing your mouth. If the symptoms persist see your doctor who might refer you to an ENT specialist.
