LightAir: A New Take On An Old Idea?

In a continuing effort to provide the best products for our customers, we at achoo! Allergy are always looking for new products and technologies in the air purifier/air cleaner field. Recently we discovered a relatively new Swedish company that offers a very modern and sleek air cleaner. Sold primarily in Europe this unit is being launched into the North American market this fall.

This new product purports to offer a better take on a not-so-new technology, ionization. With the collapse of the Sharper Image and its popular Ionic Breeze, there have been few positives emerging when it comes to ionizing air purifiers. The production of ozone, a harmful lung irritant, and low efficiency have been two serious problems plaguing this technology. LightAir believes it has solved these problems with the LightAir IonFlow 50.

The IonFlow 50 comes in three styles, two of which are free standing and a third that can be suspended from overhead. All three are extremely light, quiet and compact. Their stylish appearance helps them blend into the décor of most rooms. Each unit, which consumes a fraction of the energy used to power a standard light bulb, is very energy efficient. As with all filter plate air purifiers, the LightAir does not contain filters, and maintaining them consists of regularly washing the collector plates.

What is most important is the production of ozone and how efficient the unit is. Tests performed in Sweden show that in an enclosed room, steady-state ozone concentration was below the detectable limit of the measuring instruments used (0.002 ppm). The test ran for several hours, and the absence of ozone remained constant. Initial particle reduction tests have also yielded good results. While this is certainly promising, the results of a comparative particle reduction test have yet to be released.

The LightAir IonFlow is a very sleek and modern looking air cleaner. While testing has shown it produces no ozone, the actual efficiency of the product compared to more traditional air purifiers has yet to be shown, and the fact remains, there are some particles, specifically some types of bacteria, which cannot be charged. Additionally, we have questions concerning the LightAir’s odor removing ability. The LightAir seems like a marked improvement over its predecessors, and initial results look good. The design makes this a new attractive product, but until we can compare its efficiency to industry leaders it is difficult to say whether this would be a fitting product for our customers.

Dyson DC25 Vacuum Review

Dyson DC25 vacuumI hate vacuuming. My girlfriend has two long-haired cats, and the hair gets everywhere. (And, yes, I am allergic.)

We've had an older Dyson DC14 Animal vacuum for the past couple of years, but I recently got the chance to try out a new Dyson DC25 vacuum. It was great! It was so much lighter than the Dyson Animal - without any loss of suction.

The Dyson DC25 vacuum is only 16 pounds, and it has The Ball technology exclusive to Dyson, so it offers unprecented cleaning reach. I thoroughly vacuumed every inch of the carpet without having to move furniture or even strain my wrist. The ball allows the vacuum to tilt and twist like some sort of enlightened yogi vac. It even cleans that little crevice right next to the wall - amazing edge cleaning. The Dyson DC25 vacuum almost makes vacuuming fun.

Atlanta Journal Constitution Reviews Allergy Armor Pillow Covers

Allergy Armor allergy beddingA team of Atlanta Journal Constitution readers reviewed our Allergy Armor Ultra pillow covers in the Better Health section of the June 18 newspaper.

Robby Cantrell of Cumming, GA, said, "After using Allergy Armor pillowcases for a few nights, it was hard for me to know if the pillowcase had really done much. So when I mentioned my inability to really rate the product to my wife, she informed me that during allergy season I tend to breathe hard or snore, but since using the pillowcase, all of that has stopped."

Note that it takes more than a few days for an Allergy Armor pillow cover to drastically reduce the dust mite population in your pillow; it normally takes two weeks to a month. When you zip up the pillow cover, you trap any dust mites inside and cut them off from their food supply (which is primarily your dead skin).

We also recommend that you use an Allergy Armor mattress cover in conjunction with the pillow cover for complete protection. See How to Allergy-Proof Your Bedroom to learn more.

Another reviewer, Kristine Galinis of Atlanta, GA, was not experiencing any allergy symptoms at the time of the review, and she normally suffers from seasonal allergies only during the spring, but she "will continue to use [the pillow cover] in hopes of preventing or taming any future allergy-related problems."

The final reviewer, Rosalyn Jordan of Fayetteville, GA, slept directly on the pillow cover instead of placing her regular pillowcase over the Allergy Armor cover, and she complained that it was hard to adjust against her head. She also compared it to sleeping on a polyester leisure suit. The pillow cover is indeed made from microfiber polyester, but when used properly, it is imperceptible beneath your regular pillowcase.

Elite Athletes Rely On Honeycomb Mask to Filter Beijing Air Pollution

Honeycomb MaskAs the August Olympic games in Beijing draw near, many world class athletes and trainers are discovering the benefits of the I Can Breathe!® Honeycomb ACF Pollution Mask.

Air pollution in Beijing is among the worst in the world. On a typical day, pollution levels in Beijing are nearly five times World Health Organization standards for safety!

As principal consultant for Environmental Forward Observer, Mark Hodges has studied the air quality in Beijing, as well as the effectiveness of the I Can Breathe!® Honeycomb Mask.

"The data I have is qualitative from the perspectives of fit, convenience, comfort, durability, and perceptibly cleaner air breathed while using the mask," says Hodges. "It's numerous positive features notwithstanding, good fit and seal are essential, and the I Can Breathe!® ACF Pollution Mask fits and seals well. Further, it is comfortable, which is very important as people tend to take a mask off after a while if it is uncomfortable or restricts breathing."

Vital Oxide - Multipurpose Green Cleaning Solution

If you're a regular reader, you'll remember that I recently rented a house, and I've been working on a hypoallergenic home remodeling project.

At this point, I'm finished with all of the major labor, but I still have a lot of cleaning to do.

Vital OxideOver the weekend, I had the opportunity to try out a new cleaning solution - Vital Oxide - and it works great!

It's a broad-spectrum disinfectant that kills germs like MRSA, E coli, Legionella, Norovirus, and other microbes. I've been using it to clean all the nooks and crannies in cabinets and in the bathroom.

Vital Oxide also works great for mold and mildew removal and prevention. I even used it on the exterior of my house to treat the vinyl siding.

Finally, it gets rid of odors. The previous occupants of my place had a dog that apparently spent a lot of time in the basement; needless to say, the basement had quite a strong canine odor (a wet canine odor, to be exact) - but not anymore!

Vital Oxide is ideal for allergy sufferers because it's odorless, hypoallergenic, and doesn't contain any VOCs.

It's also safe for the environment because it doesn't produce any toxic byproducts, and it's 100% biodegradable.
Vital Oxide is approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency. It's an all-in-one green cleaning solution.

Vital Oxide works based on the power of oxygen. Its active ingredient is stabilized CLO2, which is not the same thing as chlorine bleach. CLO2 is non-toxic, non-corrosive, and odorless; it's actually used by many cities to purify drinking water, and even though it's a powerful cleaning agent, it's safe enough to wash your hands in. CLO2 contains one chlorine atom and two oxygen atom, and it acts as an oxidizing agent to denature proteins and destroy bacteria, viruses, and allergens.

Teenagers & Young Adults Most Likely to Die from Food Allergy

CNN reports that a new study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology shows that most people who died from food-induced anaphlyaxis were teenagers or young adults who were away from home when they ate the food that killed them.

"We were surprised that so few people had gotten correct information about ingredients in restaurant settings, which accounted for about half of these fatal reactions," says study author Anne Muñoz-Furlong, founder and CEO of the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, a nonprofit advocacy and education group. "The individuals either did not ask about ingredient information -- and assumed the food was safe -- or the restaurant staff gave them incorrect or incomplete information."

Often times, teenagers with food allergies feel embarrassed to talk to restaurant employees about the allergy. Food Allergy Restaurant Cards make the process easier on the allergy sufferer and the restaurant employees.

"What was most heartbreaking," says Muñoz-Furlong, "is that the story repeats itself over and over again and the fact that these deaths are preventable."

Product Review: M1 Housewash

On Saturday, the dreaded day had come: it was time to catch up on my house cleaning. In preparation for my epic day of winter cleaning, I had armed myself with a bottle of M1 House Wash. I was eager to test its powers.
First: the preparation. It comes in a pour bottle, so to use it, you'll probably need a spray bottle of some sort. Luckily, I had a spray cleaner bottle from the grocery store that was on its last leg, so I dumped the last tablespoon of cleaner out and filled the spray bottle up with M1 House Wash instead. It reminded me of cleaning the bathrooms as a kid – my mom always used this type of dilutable cleaner, since it was so economical.
The M1 House Wash bottle comes with a tag that explains how to best use the cleaner for 35 different applications. Most of the normal household applications called for an 8:1 dilution with water, so I decided to go this route. I recommend having several clear spray bottles on hand and labeling them according to different dilutions. For example, 3:1 Housewash (for heavy duty applications like barbecue grills, pet odors, etc) 8:1 Housewash (for normal household cleaning), and 64:1 Housewash (for mirrors, chrome, and other shiny surfaces). Pretty cool – one cleaner for everything.
Anyway, having mixed my 8:1 cleaner, I started with the bathroom. The cleaner worked great on the sinks, countertops, toilet, etc. I also used it to clean the bathtub and it worked pretty well, but I think I will stick with an abrasive cleaner in the tub for the future.
Then I moved on to the kitchen. Kitchen counters, stove top, etc. The cleaner did an extremely impressive job on the microwave, which was dirtier than I like to admit.
My main worry about the cleaner was that it would have a bad smell, as its bright yellow appearance made it look lemony. As I am very sensitive to chemical fragrances and smells, I am pretty picky about cleaners, especially in a small area like the bathroom. However, the M1 Housewash does not have an irritating smell. It is not completely odorless, but the smell is very faint and did not bother me.
In conclusion: The M1 House Wash will probably not replace ALL your cleaners if you like to use scouring powder, and it takes a little bit of initial effort to mix and set up. However, it is an extremely economical cleaner which will last for a long time. The 32 oz bottle may seem a bit pricey at $11.99, but for normal household use it dilutes to 2 gallons, a steal compared to Fantastic-type cleaners you can find at the grocery store. It's a great cleaner to have on hand, as you can really use it on just about every surface imaginable. I still have to try it out on my coffee pot, laundry, gutters, the inside of the car, and the rest of the 35 uses. Fortunately, I still have quite a bit left. : )

You can read more or purchase M1 Housewash at www.achooallergy.com's cleaning supplies page.
