Known for their durable design, powerful HEPA and activated carbon filtration, and long-lasting performance, Austin Air Purifiers help reduce allergens, pet dander, smoke, odors, and airborne toxins in your home. Whether you struggle with asthma, dust allergies, or seasonal sensitivities, choosing an Austin Air Purifier can make a noticeable difference in how you breathe, sleep, and feel every day. Investing in cleaner air is more than a lifestyle upgrade; it’s a commitment to your long-term health and comfort.
Austin Air Systems was founded three decades ago when its founder, the late Richard Taylor, made the decision to help heal his wife, Joyce. Unfortunately, Joyce struggled with lifelong respiratory issues that wouldn’t improve with medications or dietary changes. Eventually, they finally figured out that the air Joyce was breathing was contaminated.
Influenced by the technology already used in medical facilities, Richard wanted to recreate one of the only environments where Joyce felt relief – her hospital room. Pairing both True Medical HEPA and Activated Carbon, Richard manufactured a filter made specifically to capture particulates and chemical toxicity. With the first week she was able to sleep undisturbed through the night.
At first, Richard built just a few units in his own workshop. The next year he made approximately 1,500 units in a leased workshop. Joyce turned out not to be the only one who benefitted from Richards innovative design. Over tens of thousands of other people were able to experience real relief as well. To this day, Austin Air Systems is among the largest air cleaning manufacturing facilities across the entire world.
Today, Austin Air remains the original maker of high-end filtration systems and is sold in more than 100 countries. Moreover, they maintain the largest air cleaner manufacturing facility in the world at over 480,000 square feet. Their company is proud to say they assemble everything in their home facility in Buffalo, New York.
Austin Air Systems Company Timeline:
1900’s
In the year 1990, Austin Air’s flagship purifier the Austin Air HealthMate® was debut. It used True Medical Grade HEPA and Granular Activated Carbon filter technology. It’s also Austin Air’s first ever domestic air purifier. Later the next year, in 1992, Austin Air was featured in medical and health newsletters such as Dr. Whitaker’s “Health & Healing”. Their HealthMate® purifier was proven to remove up to 99.7% of particles greater than 0.3 microns and 99% of particles greater than 0.1 microns.
2000’s
In the 2000’s the
Austin Air HealthMate® underwent testing along with 100 other purifiers at Battelle Laboratories, Aberdeen, MD. Because of this, the HealthMate® was selected as the top air purifier for chemical and VOC filtration. In 2001, after 9/11 Austin Air products were recommended by Red Cross, FEMA, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help combat the negative effects of ash, chemicals, and VOCs that were released into the air after the attack. Later in the year, Austin Air was chosen by the country’s number one children’s hospital, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, to take part in another clinical trial.
In the year 2002, following the Battelle Labs tests, Austin Air was chosen again by the U.S. government for one of the largest deployments of air purifiers in the world up till that point. The Austin Air units are able to help protect residents of Anniston, Alabama, during the elimination of chemical weapons. In 2009, Austin Air is then selected by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, to carry out more clinical trials regarding its effectiveness at reducing indoor Nitrogen Dioxide levels.
2010’s
In the year 2010, Austin Air paired with Johns Hopkins again for more clinical trials. The first was to measure how an Austin Air purifier can improve indoor air quality for pregnant women and women with young children who are also living with a smoker. Another of their trials explored how using an Austin Air Purifier can help to improve symptoms of COPD. Additionally, in 2010, Austin Systems received the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Resources Board certification. This certification confirms that Austin Air Purifiers fall well under the standard limit for ozone emissions. Lastly, Austin Air’s Allergy Machine® is clinically proven by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to reduce childhood asthma symptoms and help minimize visits to the emergency room.
2015
Come 2015, Austin Air worked with the University of Washington to test how an air purifier can help to improve air quality for kids living with asthma living in the Yakima Valley. Also, that year, their first trial with Johns Hopkins was published. Results of the trial showed that running an Austin Air Purifier does help improve air quality and reduce levels of Nitrogen Dioxide in the homes of people with gas stoves. In 2016, the Austin Air HealthMate Plus® was distributed to thousands of residents in Porter Ranch, California, and the surrounding Aliso Canyon Area. This helps residents protect themselves against the effects of the Southern California gas leak.
2018 – 2019
In 2018, the results of Austin Air’s second study with Johns Hopkins were published. This study states that Austin Air Purifiers successfully reduce the level of nicotine in the home. The following year, in 2019, Austin Air paired with numerous organizations in the Boston area, including the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, East Boston Social Centers, AIRInc, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. They partnered with these organizations to help improve air for the residents living in close proximity to Logan International Airport in East Boston.
2020’s
Austin Air Systems celebrates 30 years of helping create cleaner air in 2020. Months later, the results of their trial with Washington University are published and support many other clinical trials they’ve participated in. Results concluded that removing pollutants from the home helps to improve children’s asthma symptoms and, as a result, reduces the number of asthma attacks and visits to the emergency room.
The results of the trial with Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering were published in 2021. This particular study showed that
running an Austin Air Purifier helps lower blood pressure for individuals exposed to vehicle pollution. Again in 2021, the results of another study with Johns Hopkins were published and showed that implementing an Austin Air purifier can help improve symptoms of COPD. Lastly, that year, over 40,000 Austin Air purifiers were supplied to schools in Canada to help protect over 1 million students and staff.
Clean Air For First Responders & Schools
When it came to government testing, Austin Air outperformed over 100 other air purifiers. Because of this, FEMA, and the American Red Cross selected Austin Air Systems at some of America’s most difficult times, including 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and the 2015 SoCal gas leak. For many decades, Austin Air has helped to filter out toxic pollutants and contaminants released during wildfires as well.
Additionally, Austin Air has been helping provide cleaner air to numerous schools, hospitals, and businesses as they work to increase safety measures during the 2020 pandemic. The WHO (World Health Organization and the CDC (Center for Disease Control) both recommend HEPA air filtration to help reduce the risk of Covid-19 indoors. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) even suggested that air purifiers can help increase student grades and reduce absenteeism, making air purification about much more than Covid.
Overall, if there’s anything we’ve learned from the 2020 pandemic, it’s how vitally important clean air is. Individuals everywhere, including cities and rural areas, as well as homes and apartments, were all trying their best to reduce viral transmission and make the air in these environments safer to breathe. Additionally, government leaders considered this as well, and as a result, made billions of dollars available to businesses and schools to help improve indoor air quality. Despite this, there are other respiratory disorders that are also still of concern.
- 1 in 12 people (about 25 million) now suffer from asthma
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has become the third leading cause of death worldwide in 2019, causing 3.23 million deaths that year
- According to the CDC, 7.1 million people now struggle with respiratory allergies
- The number of individuals with MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities) has increased by over 300% in the past decade, with many reporting asthma or asthma-like conditions

Testing
The Medical Grade HEPA material used in every Austin Air filter has been independently certified, ensuring it removes up to 99.97% of particulates. Furthermore, product testing on flow, vapor, gas, and sub-micron particle removal was performed by Battelle Laboratories. Battelle is one of the world’s leading and most respected laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center.
Clinical Trials
Austin Air is one of the only air cleaning companies that work with research organizations to conduct numerous clinical trials on their own products. Some of the organizations they’ve worked closely with include Johns Hopkins University, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the University of Washington, and Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering.
Filter Specifications
Extensively reviewed by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), and compared to all available cleaning technologies, the organization determined that the most effective air purifiers are those that use both HEPA and Carbon filtration. In particular, Austin Air Systems Air Purifiers utilize up to 15 lbs. of Carbon and 60 sq. ft. of HEPA within their filters, which is more than anyone in the industry.
Non-Toxic Materials
Made with non-toxic materials, Austin Air Systems manufactures its purifiers with solid steel and non-toxic powder-coated paint, whereas many other brands on the market build their purifiers with plastic frames and traditional paint. As a result, this often leads to more harmful contaminants being released into the air. Moreover, Austin Air purifiers don’t produce any harmful off-gassing or ozone.
