Allergy Pillow Replacement is one of the most overlooked steps in achieving true allergy relief and better sleep quality. Over time, pillows become breeding grounds for dust mites, bacteria, mold spores, and other allergens that can trigger sneezing, congestion, or morning headaches. Even the cleanest-looking pillow can secretly harbor millions of particles that aggravate allergy symptoms. That’s why experts recommend evaluating and replacing your pillow every one to two years, or sooner if you suffer from allergies or asthma.
By investing in high-quality allergy bedding and hypoallergenic pillow protectors, you can significantly reduce your exposure to irritants. Allergy-proof encasings act as a barrier, preventing dust mites and other allergens from penetrating your pillow, while breathable materials like cotton or microfiber ensure comfort without compromising protection. If your pillow has lost its shape, feels lumpy, or causes frequent sniffles, it’s a strong sign that it’s time for a fresh start.
When selecting a new pillow, look for options labeled as dust mite resistant, hypoallergenic, or machine washable. Combining these features with a full set of allergy bedding protectors, including mattress and pillow encasings, creates a cleaner sleep environment and provides long-term defense against allergen buildup.
A proper allergy pillow replacement not only supports better breathing but also enhances sleep hygiene and comfort. Regularly refreshing your pillow and encasings is a simple yet powerful step toward improving your nightly rest and overall well-being. Remember, your pillow is one of the closest items to your face for hours each night, so keeping it clean, fresh, and allergen-free can make all the difference in how you feel each morning.
Has your pillow turned yellow? It’s not a pretty sight, nor is the reason behind it. Why do pillows turn yellow? They can turn yellow for a number of reasons, including sweat, drool, oil from skin and hair, or residue from hygiene products like makeup, hairspray, and moisturizer. Additionally, if your pillow is old enough that it’s turned yellow, it’s probably safe to assume there are other unpleasant things lurking in your pillow as well. Dust mites, allergens, and bacteria all thrive in the warm and moist environment that is an old pillow.
Discoloration isn’t the only sign that it could be time for a new pillow. Comfort and shape is another factor when it comes to replacing your pillow. Pillows are meant to help support us when we sleep, so it’s important they don’t lose their supportive qualities. However, despite our best intentions, even high-quality pillows will need to be replaced over time due to one issue or another. Here at Achoo Allergy, we know the difference the right kind of pillow can make to your sleep quality. We’re happy to help and share our knowledge so you can identify when it’s the right time to replace your pillow, as well as the steps to protect and care for it.
Why Replacing Your Pillow is Important
The AAFA (Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America) recommends replacing your pillow every two years or sooner. This is because pillows can harbor all sorts of nasty things as they get older. They can accumulate dirt, sweat, oils, bacteria, and germs, making them a problem for individuals with sensitive skin. Moreover, allergens like dust mites, pet dander, and even mold can begin to build up over time, creating problems for allergy and asthma sufferers. Pillows also begin to lose their shape when used for long periods, and this can result in sore muscles and uncomfortable sleeping positions. Together, these issues can lead to acne, skin irritation, sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, headaches, muscle aches, and more.
Dust mites, in particular, can become quite a big issue for anyone allergic to them or their waste. What’s worse is dust mites are so tiny you can’t see them with the naked eye. Despite this, they can quickly multiply inside your pillow unless you take steps to protect against them. Dust mites eat and survive off of our dead skin cells, which make our beds and our pillows the perfect home for them. Furthermore, after two years, almost 10% of the weight of your pillow can be attributed to dead dust mites and their waste. Many people are allergic to both dust mites themselves and their waste, making them a big issue when you are trying to get a good night’s sleep. This makes dust mites alone a good reason for replacing your pillow every two years.
Specific Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Pillow
Losing Its Shape: When your pillow becomes misshapen, lumpy, or deflated, it’s probably a good sign it’s time to replace your pillow. Fluffing your pillow morning and night can help improve its supportiveness and keep its shape intact. Additionally, most pillows, including our own BedCare™ All-Cotton Mite Proof Pillow, will benefit from being placed in a dryer on low heat for 15-30 minutes to help fluff, reshape, and increase supportiveness.
Odors & Stains: Be on the lookout for new stains and smells on your pillow when you change and wash your pillowcase. Should you find new odors or discoloration, be sure to wash the pillow according to what the manufacturer recommends. We recommend using anti-allergen laundry detergent or additives like Mite-Y Clean All Natural Laundry Detergent and Mite-Y Clean All-Natural Laundry Additive to help neutralize and remove allergens like dust mites, pollen, pet dander, mold, and more.
Allergens: If you frequently wake up sneezing, coughing, or have itchy and watery eyes, there’s a good chance your pillow is the culprit. Pillows are known for harboring allergens like pet dander, pollen, mold, and dust mites. Thankfully, you can help protect your pillow and yourself by using a zippered pillow protector like our BedCare™ All-Cotton Allergy Pillow Protector. These types of pillow encasements will help protect against and block allergens from passing through your pillow so you can enjoy a more restful night’s sleep.
Sleep changes: After using the same pillow for long periods of time, you may start to notice neck pain, back pain, or frequent tossing and turning during sleep. These sleep changes can be a direct result of improper support by your pillow. Although the initial cause of your pain could be an injury, weight loss or gain, or another issue, replacing your pillow could be the solution. If you notice that your pillow is deflated or lumpy, it could point to the fact that it’s no longer supporting you, and it’s time to replace it. Upgrading your bedding setup can also contribute to better back pain relief to help you wake up more refreshed and aligned.
Which Pillows Last Longest
Did you know your pillow’s lifespan can be a direct result of what it’s made from and how you care for it? Many high-quality pillows can help you get a good night’s sleep, but not all are created equally. If you have the right pillow made from the right material with the perfect amount of support, it makes it that much easier to fall asleep and stay asleep at night. In particular, pillows can be made from any number of materials, including latex, memory foam, down (feathers), cotton, polyester, and more. Some last longer and fare better than others, and some are better for certain individuals due to preferences or allergies.
Cotton Pillows
Cotton, in particular, is a popular and natural material that high-quality pillows are often made from. Premium tightly woven cotton pillows like our own BedCare™ All-Cotton Mite-Proof Pillows are made from 100% finely woven cotton. Our tight cotton weave ensures allergens can’t pass through, but air still can. Because of this, our All-Cotton pillows remain cool and breathable while also helping block out dust mites, bed bugs, and other allergens. Our All-Cotton Allergy Pillows are made with a 300 thread count and 100% cotton shell with a luxuriously soft and fluffy polyester fill.
Wool Pillows
The Sleep & Beyond myWoolly® Adjustable Natural Wool Washable Pillow is an excellent choice for anyone replacing an outdated pillow that no longer provides comfort or proper support. Designed with adjustability in mind, this pillow allows you to fine-tune the loft and firmness by adding or removing its soft, natural wool puffs, making it easy to create the ideal height for spinal, neck, and head alignment. This is especially helpful when transitioning to a new pillow after years of using one that has flattened or stopped offering adequate support. The Shropshire wool fill delivers exceptional temperature balance and moisture control, eliminating the familiar “wet and soggy pillow” feeling that often signals it’s time for a replacement. Its natural ability to wick moisture reduces overheating, night sweats, and restless sleep, making the upgrade more comfortable from the very first night. Encased in a 100% natural cotton sateen quilted cover (300TC), the pillow offers enhanced breathability and long-lasting softness. For sleepers who are replacing their pillow due to allergies or dust mite buildup, the wool fill naturally repels dust mites, mold, and mildew, promoting a healthier sleep environment. One of the pillow’s biggest advantages is that the entire item, cover, and wool fill, can be machine-washed, keeping it fresher and more sanitary than typical pillows. Available in Standard, Queen, and King sizes and backed by a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty, the myWoolly® pillow is a durable, eco-friendly upgrade that provides long-term comfort and value.
The Sleep & Beyond myMerino® Organic Merino Wool Pillow is a high-quality replacement for anyone retiring an old pillow due to allergens, synthetic materials, flattening, or discomfort. Crafted with certified organic merino wool and wrapped in a certified organic cotton percale cover (270TC), this pillow provides a pure, chemical-free sleep surface that is ideal for individuals with asthma, allergies, or multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS). Because merino wool naturally resists dust mites, mold, mildew, and bed bugs, it helps eliminate many of the common problems found in older pillows. Its moisture-wicking abilities prevent overheating and stop the “wet and soggy pillow” situation that often develops as pillows age and retain moisture. The wool fill also maintains balanced temperature regulation throughout the year, keeping sleepers cool, dry, and comfortable regardless of season. A gentle wool aroma may be noticeable at first, but this natural scent is a sign of authentic organic wool and fades within a few days, leaving a clean and calming sleep environment. Lightweight merino wool provides reliable comfort and support, helping deliver the three qualities most people seek when replacing a pillow: healthier materials, consistent support, and improved rest. Packaged in eco-friendly, reusable cotton and verified by leading third-party organic certifications, the myMerino® pillow is both sustainable and transparently produced. Known for long-term durability, merino wool outperforms many other pillow fills over time. Offered in Standard and Queen sizes and protected by a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty, this pillow is a long-lasting, health-forward choice when upgrading to a new pillow.
Silk-Lined Pillows
Another type of pillow that is very beneficial for allergy sufferers and those with sensitive skin are silk-lined pillows like the SmartSilk Silk Lined Pillow. The SmartSilk silk-lined pillows are made with a premium 100% pure and natural cotton shell and 100% Grade A Tussah Silk lining. Then, they’re finished with double-needle stitching and corded pipe trim and filled with a hypoallergenic microfiber fill. Our SmartSilk silk-lined pillows are also certified asthma & allergy friendly™ by the AAFA. In addition to the classic SmartSilk silk-lined pillow, we also carry the SmartSilk Silk Lined Travel Pillow – Set of 2, perfect for added lumbar support when sitting or driving for long periods of time, and the SmartSilk Silk Lined Body Pillow which helps give better support while sleeping on your side.
In particular, silk pillows help promote air circulation and, as a result, help to regulate body temperature. This means they’ll help you stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Furthermore, silk helps to wick away moisture, which keeps you comfortably cool and dry throughout the night. Another benefit of silk is that it has natural antibacterial and antiallergenic properties, making it skin-sensitive and allergy-friendly. These traits are particularly helpful for those who are hot sleepers and suffer from night sweats, allergies, asthma, or skin sensitivities.
No matter which type of pillow you choose, the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America recommends protecting your pillows from allergens like dust mites by using a fully zippered pillow cover. Our own BedCare™ All-Cotton Allergy Pillow Cover fabric helps protect against bed bugs and dust mites and is also Certified Asthma & Allergy Friendly™ by the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America. This certification ensures that it creates a healthier sleeping environment and helps to block allergens, remains breathable, can be easily cleaned to remove allergens, and is made from no-known asthma and allergy-triggering chemicals.
Properly Caring For Your Pillow
Once you’ve decided to purchase a replacement pillow for yourself, there are a few things you can do to protect it and prolong its lifespan. First, you’ll want to stay on top of cleaning and washing your pillow, especially if you see discoloration or notice any smells and lingering odors. Washing it regularly with an anti-allergen laundry detergent like Mite-Y Clean All Natural Laundry Detergent will help keep allergens at bay while also keeping your pillow clean. Always keep in mind that care instructions will differ depending on the type of material your pillow is made from, including its outer fabric and its fill.
Specifically, down and synthetic fill pillows can usually be washed in a washing machine on a delicate cycle, but it is important to always check with the manufacturer and read their care instructions before washing. Another useful tip is to run pillows through two rinse cycles if possible, as soapy residue can sometimes linger and cause natural down feathers to clump inside the pillow. Afterward, you can usually put down synthetic pillows in the dryer on a low-heat setting as long as the care instructions say it’s safe to do so. Finally, be sure to fluff feather and down pillows after they come out of the dryer to help them regain their shape and supportiveness.
On the other hand, down alternative pillows are a great option if you happen to be allergic to natural down feathers. These types of pillows tend to be low-maintenance and can usually be washed in a washing machine. On the other hand, it’s important to note that memory foam and latex pillows can usually only be spot-cleaned due to their materials being sensitive to heat and high temperatures. High temperatures will often cause these materials to deteriorate, and, because of this, are typically not cleaned in a washing machine or dryer. Certain types of memory foam or latex may be able to be soaked in warm water with a mild soap or detergent and then squeezed out and air-dried. However, it’s best to check with the manufacturer’s instructions before doing so.
