What is TENCEL™?

TENCEL fabric is a premium, eco-friendly material that’s gaining popularity for bedding, clothing, and home textiles. Made from sustainably sourced wood fibers, TENCEL is known for its incredible softness, breathability, and moisture-wicking properties. Understanding what TENCEL is and how it works can help you make informed decisions about bedding that promotes comfort, hygiene, and sustainable living.

One of the standout features of TENCEL fabric is its ability to regulate temperature and absorb moisture efficiently. Unlike traditional cotton or synthetic materials, TENCEL fibers draw moisture away from the body, keeping you cool and dry throughout the night. This makes TENCEL bedding particularly beneficial for allergy-sensitive individuals, as it resists dust mites and reduces the buildup of allergens over time.

The production process of TENCEL fabric is also environmentally responsible. Using a closed-loop system, the process recycles water and solvents, reducing waste and energy use. This makes TENCEL one of the most sustainable options for bedding and apparel. Beyond sustainability, TENCEL is durable and easy to care for, maintaining its softness and integrity even after repeated washing.

By choosing TENCEL fabric, you’re investing in bedding that combines comfort, health, and sustainability. Its silky-smooth texture, natural breathability, and hypoallergenic qualities make it ideal for a wide range of sleepers and lifestyles. Whether for sheets, pillowcases, or duvet covers, TENCEL offers a luxurious sleep experience that supports both your well-being and the environment.

What is Tencel™ ?

If you’re into fashion such as pieces like long sequin prom dresses, upholstery, or the fabric/textile world in general, you may have heard the term “Tencel” being used lately. Maybe you already know what TENCEL™ is, or maybe you’re wondering what the heck that is? For all those that don’t know, the word “Tencel” is simply a brand name for the word Lyocell. Specifically, Lyocell is a wonderful and sustainable fiber made from wood pulp. However, there are many varieties of Lyocell made around the world, and TENCEL™ is at the top as one of the most high-quality forms.

You may be more curious to know about the sustainable ways TENCEL™ is created. In particular, TENCEL™ is made via an environmentally sustainable process using raw wood called “regenerated cellulose.” To explain, regenerated cellulose is formed when raw wood is harvested, churned into wood pulp, broken down by an organic chemical solvent, and then forced through a machine to form fibers. The end result is ultra-soft and plush fibers that feel like wisps of clouds!

Fibers made from TENCEL™ Lyocell are known for their extreme softness and eco-friendly production practices. Additionally, TENCEL™ Fibers are also recognized for their moisture absorption capabilities (being 70% more absorbent than cotton). Moreover, because TENCEL™ Fibers are breathable, waterproof, and also naturally antibacterial, they make a superb material for our BedCare™ Fitted Eucalyptus TENCEL™ Hypoallergenic & Waterproof Mattress Protectors!

Noteworthy Traits of TENCEL™ Lyocell Fibers:

  • Durable: TENCEL™ fibers are long lasting, resistant to wrinkles, easy to wash and maintain.
  • Ultra-Soft: Ultra-soft and supremely comfortable, TENCEL’S™ gentle cloud-like feel can’t be beat.
  • Moisture Absorbent: TENCEL™ fibers provide superior moisture-wicking capabilities helping to keep skin cool and comfortable.
  • Breathable: Lyocell TENCEL™ fibers are exceptionally breathable to help prevent sweating at night.
  • Antibacterial: Naturally antibacterial, TENCEL™ helps prevent the growth of germs and bacteria to limit unwanted breakouts.
  • Eco-Friendly: Created from sustainably sourced wood in a closed loop eco-friendly process in which 99% of water and solvent is reused and recycled.

Why is TENCEL™ Fabric So Sustainable?

TENCEL’S™ manufacturing process is considered environmentally sustainable. It’s also made from natural plant materials, including wood pulp, and requires less energy and water to manufacture than cotton or rayon. In addition, TENCEL™ fabric is also biodegradable, meaning it can be decomposed naturally by the earth and its organisms!

TENCEL™ fibers use wood pulp from only certified and controlled sources. This ensures that the wood used won’t be over-harvested to the detriment of the environment and that it won’t decrease the quality of the land or soil it comes from! Moreover, the growing of wood for TENCEL™ Lyocell needs no irrigation or pesticides. In contrast, plants like cotton can often use excessive amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, leading to soil and land degradation. This means that the quality of soil and its mineral and nutrient content will deplete and decline, making the soil no longer able to sustain and grow plant life.

TENCEL™ uses a closed loop production process when it comes to water usage. This means that 99% of the water and chemicals used are reused and recycled again and again to produce new fibers and reduce waste. Unlike cotton, bamboo, and rayon, which use various harsh chemicals to break down pulp, TENCEL™ only uses an organic chemical called amine-oxide, which is non-toxic.

IS TENCEL™ Bedding Better For Sleep?

  • Luxuriously Soft & Gentle: TENCEL™ is 2x softer than cotton and non-irritating, making it perfect for people with sensitive skin. Unlike sometimes scratchy cotton fibers, Tencel Lyocell fibers are closer to silk in texture.
  • Perfect for Sensitive Skin: TENCEL™ is 3x more breathable than cotton and hypoallergenic. This is important for preventing skin sensitivities. Tencel is also non-irritating and antibacterial, which is ideal for preventing breakouts.
  • Virtually Made for Hot Sleepers: TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers remain breathable and cool and help prevent sweating during the night! This is thanks to their ability to be up to 70% more moisture-wicking than cotton.
  • Environmentally Friendly: TENCEL™ is one of the world’s most sustainable materials thanks to its manufacturing process. This makes it great for the environment and you!
  • Durability:TENCEL™ bedding and mattress covers wrinkle significantly less than cotton. In addition, they are infinitely easier to take care of, don’t shrink in the wash, and are more resistant to breaking down over time.
