FURminator and the Hairy Truth About Pet Dander

Furminator Pet Hair Brush

According to WebMD, 100% of all U.S. households contain detectable levels of dog and cat dander. So whether you have pets in your home or not, you likely have pet dander. Approximately 10-15% of us suffer from pet allergies, but don't be confused; it isn't the actual hair we are allergic to - it is the allergen that clings to the hair. Pet dander consists of microscopic flakes of dead skin that cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive. Pet dander, particularly cat dander, can be as small as about 2.5 microns, making it easily airborne and hard to capture. In addition to remaining in the air where it's easily inhaled, pet dander can penetrate fabric and upholstery. But for many dog lovers like me, we simply don't mind a stuffy nose or itchy eyes as long as we our faithful friend by our side.

So what can we do as pet owners to eliminate exposure to the pet hair that contains these pesky allergens? One of the first things we can do is eliminate excess hair and be proactive about reducing the amount of hair our pet sheds. I have tried over a dozen different kinds of brushes, and most simply remove the top coat of hair. One pet hair brush that outperforms nearly all others is the FURminator. The FURminator deshedding tool is a specially designed “shed-less” treatment for cat and dog owners. FURminator's unique blade removes loose undercoat hair while leaving the top coat healthy and intact. And though it will removes only loose top coat hair, it won't pull or damage your pet's coat like other brushes. The FURminator dramatically reduces the mess and clean up of unwanted pet hair. It is has been proven to decrease shedding by 60-80%. And less pet hair floating around in your home means you can breathe easier!

The FURminator comes in all sizes, making it perfect for smallest or largest of pets. For most breeds using the tool twice a week for 10 minutes per session will reduce shedding by up to 90%. Another benefit to a brush like this is that during the hot summer months, like what we are currently dealing with in the southeast, removing the excess undercoat helps keep your pet cooler. All of these things make the FURminator brushes highly recommended by allergists, veterinarians, and pet groomers alike.

Other simple pet allergy tips:

  • Reduce allergen levels by washing your pet weekly with Anti-Allergen Pet Shampoo.
  • If not bathing weekly, use Alerpet/D for Dogs topically to reduce dander on off weeks.
  • Use a HEPA vacuum cleaner. This alone will make a world of difference in reducing pet dander on your floors and furniture.
  • Spray Anti-Allergen Solution on furniture, carpets and curtains to neutralize any dander that is already in the environment.
  • Lastly, but likely most important, use a HEPA Air Purifier, like the Austin Pet Machine, that is specifically made to trap pet dander. HEPA air purifiers can help trap and remove even tiny cat dander from the air inside your home.
