what is ragweed, exactly?

Ragweed is a pollen-producing plant that lives only one season and is the main cause of fall allergy symptoms in the U.S.  It is a prolific plant that thrives in sunny, newly disturbed soils free from other vegetation, such as vacant lots, riverbanks and along roadsides. The seed-producing, yellow flowers on the ragweed plant mature as the nights grow longer and release pollen. Depending on the weather, the pollen count found in urban areas usually peaks mid-morning to mid-afternoon.

surviving ragweed season

Follow these tips to reduce your exposure to ragweed and minimize
 your allergy symptoms this fall

  • Keep track of pollen and mold counts in your area

  • minimize outdoor activity when counts are high.  Stay indoors, using air conditioning along with an air purifier to clean, cool and dry the inside air

  • keep windows both in your car and in your house closed

  • when doing yard work, wear a mask to avoid inhaling allergens
  • shower and wash your clothing immediately after coming in from outside activities.  Pollen collects on clothing and in your hair

  • bathe pets regularly

  • avoid hanging sheets and clothing outside to dry as pollens and molds may collect on them

  • encase your mattress and pillow in allergen proof covers

  • vacuum frequently with a certified HEPA vacuum cleaner

  • use saline nasal solution to irrigate nasal passages and thin nasal secretions to clear your stuffy nose

  • consult your health provider to determine the most effective treatment for this and all allergies
