cat allergy: living with cats Many people experience allergic reactions when they are exposed to cat dander (skin flakes) and a protein found in cats saliva.

Although the fur of a cat is not a major allergen, it does collect pollen, dust, mold spores and other irritants, making it an allergic trigger.

Cat dander is very sticky and can remain airborne for hours and can be found in places where cats have never even been present, often times brought in on the clothing of the cat owner.

  1. Keep your cat permanently out of your bedroom and closet!  This is the most difficult thing to do, but it is the most important.  Do not sleep with your cat!

  2. Clean the air in your bedroom with a HEPA air purifier to remove airborne cat dander and other airborne irritants.  Leave it running all the time.

  3. Vacuum the entire home at least once a week using a HEPA vacuum cleaner that removes and permanently traps airborne allergens.

  4. Install a high-efficiency furnace filter on home climate control systems to prevent dander from re-circulating throughout the home.  Change filters monthly during summer months.

  5. Put vent filters over register vents. Change filters monthly during summer months.

  6. Wash your cat at least every other week and use a dander reducing shampoo or pet wipe.

  7. Wash hands thoroughly after playing with your cat.
