Hunter QuietFLO 30085 Air Purifier
As one of the most popular Hunter air purifiers available, the QuietFLO 85 is a HEPA quality air cleaner with an introductory price.
This no frills True HEPA air purifier offers basic HEPA filtration in a compact package. With a activated carbon pre-filter and 5 year
warranty, the Hunter 30085 is an ideal fit for allergy or asthma sufferers looking to purify the air in rooms up to 225 sq. ft.
What I like about the Hunter 30085 Air Purifier
The HEPA filtration is the backbone of this air purifier. The HEPA filter captures 99.7% of all particles 0.3 microns or small, and a
built in rubber seal around the filter works to make air leaking virtually nonexistent. As a standard HEPA filter, the filtration is ideal
for trapping pet dander, pollen, mold spores, dust mite feces and other allergens that can cause asthma attacks and allergic reactions. The
carbon pre-filter is similar to that found in Honeywell air purifiers. The activated carbon offers you some measure of smoke and odor
filtration while trapping larger, visible air particles like cat or dog hair.
Beyond the most attractive feature of the Hunter 30085 is the price. This initial cost fits nearly anyone's budget and yearly upkeep costs consist
of replacing the HEPA filter annually and the pre-filter once ever three months.
This is a quiet air purifier. On the lowest setting, the decibel level rivals that of the much more expensive Blueair units. At the second
setting the noise increases some but is still quieter than a box fan or oscillating fan operating on low. On the highest setting the noise level
does increase but is still not to the point to where you would have to turn the
TV volume up more than one or two settings to accommodate for it.
Operation is basic yet efficient. There are three speeds and a manual countdown knob to remind you when to replace the HEPA and pre-filters. Maintenance
consists mainly of changing the filter.
One interesting thing I found while reviewing this air purifier was that the motor seems to adjust to the amount of resistance in pulling
air through the filter. When I removed the filter the motor seems to slow while when the
filter was installed as it is supposed to be, the motor
began to ramp up due to the resistance of air having to pass through the HEPA filter. This seems to mean that the motor will adjust to
predetermined CFM airflow levels, but this also underlies the fact that filters should be changed regularly to prevent placing undue strain on the motor.
What I did not like about the Hunter 30085 Air Purifier
The biggest drawback is also one of it's biggest assets. While the price of this unit is very economical, as with most home
appliances, you get what you pay for. This air purifier, though HEPA, is very basic in nature. It lacks the electronic controls and
digital features of more expensive models.
If particle filtration is what you need, the QuietFLO 85 may be for you, but if you require heavy duty, smoke, odor, MCS or VOC
filtration you should opt for a model that comes with a large activated carbon filter in addition to a HEPA filter. While the pre-filter
does filter some odor and smoke, there is not nearly enough carbon to properly filter the air if you need filtration for what is listed
above.
Overall, the Hunter 30085 air purifier is a
standard HEPA air cleaner with quiet, simple operation. While it may not be suited for those
who are highly sensitive or reactive to fragrances, smoke and VOC's, for particle filtration, the QuietFLO 85 offers excellent filtration
without breaking your budget. |
