Customer Q & A
Q1: Do these go on the outside or do I need to open the vent and put them in?
A: Either will work. Many people find it difficult to put them on the inside due to the louvers that are often located on the back/underside they often move and allow you to direct airflow or close the vent. On the outside or inside, both ways will offer the same filtration. If you can get them in and you mostly keep the vent in the open position. those louvers should actually help to keep the filter up towards the top of the vent and not allow it fall back/down into the ductwork.
Q2: Would these filters work to block cigarette smoke? I live in an apartment building and share a vent with a chain smoker.
A: No. While they will attract and trap some of the particles that make up smoke, they are not an effective smoke or odor barrier/filter. For that you will likely want to look at something with activated carbon. Or, if your budget allows, look into an air purifier with carbon filters, to locate near the vent to filter the air as it is coming into the room.

Permatron Register Vent Filters
I have used these register vent air filters in the two different
places I have lived in the past two years. They are inexpensive, easy to replace, and
they work really well at stopping dust before it enters a room.
I found that the vent filters easily slide between the two sets of fins in
most air registers. I have heard from several customers that they Velcro the
filters to the outside of the register, but I like the inside approach, because
they are barely visible. I recommend that you replace every 90 days if possible.
What I like about Register Vent Filters
- Very easy to install and use
- Can be cut to fit with household scissors
- Inexpensive and flexible
- Great for trapping dust before it enters a room
- Particularly useful for older homes
- Black color makes them less noticeable
What I don't like about Register Vent Filters
- The size is too small for some people. Several customers have expressed
interest in rolls of the material for bigger air registers.
This is a fantastic and necessary product for anyone that wants to reduce
dust in their home. The benefits of these filters far outweigh their cost.
We are in the habit of changing the web vent filters every time we change our
furnace filters. It is satisfying to take the dirty filters out, and it can
be surprising to find that much dust and airborne visible particulate trapped
in these filters.
