In some instances consumers require filtration of bacteria and viruses in addition to regular particle filtration. Because viruses
are so small, they can often pass through a traditional HEPA filter. To remedy this, manufacturers have began treating filters and filter
media with antimicrobial agents as well as equipping some models with UV
lamps inside of the air purifiers. As viruses or bacteria pass through, UV light sterilizes them by altering their DNA and consequently inhibiting
their ability to reproduce.
The UV bulbs in these units need to be replaced every year. While they will continue to produce light,
their effectiveness greatly diminishes around the one year mark. Keep in mind that use of a UV lamp, while effective, works best at
lower fan speeds. The longer a pathogen is exposed to UV light, the more likely it is to be rendered harmless.
