    Description

Don't be alarmed, but the reality is microbes are all around us. A great deal of these are beneficial, and we are only now beginning to better understand the positive role that bacteria and fungi play in everything from the functioning of our immune system to digestion. Even though there are many that are positive in nature there remains a great many that cause the cold, flu, and more severe illnesses, and it is often people with compromised immune systems who are most at risk. While antibacterial soaps and cleaners can help, they can also leave behind odors and residues or contain ingredients that are nearly as bad as the microbes. This is where ultraviolet light can play an important role. UV light, like that used in the AirPura UV600 air purifier, can help sanitize the air, killing microbes or rendering them harmless.

UV light is not new and is often used in hospital settings and places where the control of germs is important, even in the deli section of your local grocery store. The UV600 uses a 20 watt UV bulb to sterilize the air and kill germs and microbes that become trapped in the HEPA filter. Beyond microbe control, the AirPura UV600 uses a thick bed of activated carbon to adsorb smoke, odors, perfumes, and other chemical irritants while removing reaction causing particles like pollen and dust with 40 sq. ft. of HEPA filter media. Quiet and durable, the UV600 UV light air purifier is built for maximum air flow and effective control of a broad range of irritants.

*$50 Airpura discount is valid on select Airpura air purifier models only. Current states affected by the wildfires include California, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Oregon, Wyoming, Minnesota, Montana, Washington, and Alaska.

    Product Features
    • Five stage filtration provides comprehensive removal of particle allergens, pathogens, smoke, odors, and chemical vapors.
    • A 20 watt UV bulb kills pathogens, germs, and microbes and is CARB (California Air Resource Board) Certified, meaning it won't create ozone.
    • 40 sq.ft. of HEPA filter media removes 99.97% of particle 0.3 microns and larger, including common irritants like mold spores, dust, pollen, and pet dander.
    • A 2" thick activated carbon, derived from coconut shell, removes chemical vapors, smoke, and odors without creating problems for the chemically sensitive.
    • Carbon filter is covered with 2 Micro-Suppress filters to help suppress bacteria and viruses while a one inch thick, large particle prefilter traps large and visible particles, extending the life of the other filter layers and is easily vacuumed for extended use.
    • Felt gaskets create a sealed system, preventing air leakage without the odors associated with rubber or foam gaskets.
    • Separate filters means you change only the ones you need, saving on filter replacement costs.
    • With a powder coated steel housing, steel filter caps and few plastic or rubber components, the UV600 is durable and unlike plastic, won't off gas.
    • A superior internal design allows for the most efficient and powerful airflow which not only makes the UV600 exceptionally quiet but also efficient.
    • Variable speed motor allows you to choose just the right rate of fan speed and noise level.
    • A powerful motor creates moves an impressive 560 CFM of air for coverage that surpasses all other residential air purifiers.
    • Casters for easy movement from room to room.
    • With electrical components uniquely placed outside of the airflow, the UV600 prevents cleaned air from flowing over the motor, keeping it clean as it exits the machine.
    • Made in Canada.
    • 5 Year Manufacturer's Parts Warranty and 10 Year Manufacturer's Labor Warranty.

    AirPura UV600 Air Purifier Reviews

    AirPura UV600 Air Purifier

Whether in the doctor's office or even at the deli counter, in places where controlling bacteria and viruses is critical, you will often find some type of UV sterilization. Since it was first discovered that ultraviolet light can kill microorganisms in 1878, UV light has been used to disinfect the air and sterilize water in a variety of settings. For those particularly concerned about bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, a UV air purifier like the UV600 is the perfect way to add a new layer of control to the quality of your indoor air. With a cream colored test model, I took a closer look at this AirPura model, and this is what I found.

What I like about the Air Pura UV600 Air Purifier

Like other AirPura models, the UV600 has an austere look, and even inside, much of the air purifier is the same as the R600. The key difference lies in the UV bulb inside the machine. At 20 watts, this bulb emits wavelengths of UV light that does two things. First, it can actually break the bonds of the DNA within the organism. Second, it can seriously damage the DNA of the microbe causing irreparable damage. In both of these instances the organism is either rendered sterile by the inability to reproduce or dies as a result of exposure. The bulb used in the AirPura UV600 air purifier is centrally located, directly in the air flow. By positioning the bulb in the center of the chamber it can not only treat the air that is passing through but also effect microbes that may be trapped in the HEPA filter.

In addition to this added layer of protection, the UV600 has the same core filtration that you find with the R600. A steel-capped HEPA filter provides proven filtration of fine particles, removing 99.97% of any particles 0.3 microns or larger. This includes common allergens that can effect those with allergies, asthma or COPD including pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and mold spores. In addition to the HEPA filter is a thick drum of granulated, activated carbon. Activated carbon adsorbs smoke, odors, fragrances, and chemical vapors, trapping within the millions of pores and fissures that make carbon the most effective filter media for these types of pollutants. Bracketing the carbon are two micro-suppress filters that not only keep the carbon tucked away neatly within the filter but also act as additional layers of particle filtration. Lastly, a one inch thick, large particle prefilter traps the large visible particles, extending the life of the other filters in the system. In all, the UV600 represents a comprehensive approach to cleaning up indoor air.

The UV600 is extremely quiet. While, like other air purifiers, it can be loud on the higher fan settings, when operating at the lowest fan speed, this model is literally whisper quiet from just a few feet away. This is largely due to a streamlined internal airflow design.

Even though, I will be the first too admit that AirPura air purifiers are rather plain looking, their looks hide an easy-to-use, durable machine. Plug the UV600 in and set the fan speed, and you're already up and running. Periodically, you can vacuum off the exterior of the machine as most air purifiers, with use, will collect some visible dust on the exterior, and other than your filter changes, that's it. Simply cleaner air. In terms of durability, the steel shell is obvious, but once you open the machine you get a better idea of why these air purifiers last so long. Other than what is required for ETL certification, the AirPura uses no additional plastic or adhesives. The filter frames are steel. The body is steel. The gasket is felt (as not to off gas like rubber or foam). Each component is well made and heavy duty.

Overall, you like the quiet operation and ease of use, but the filtration remains the key to this AirPura. It also doesn't hurt that the warranty is longer than most, and the coverage area is greater than any other residential air purifier available.

What I do not like about the Air Pura UV600 Air Purifier

It's heavy. Remember what I wrote about all the steel in this machine? It adds up, in terms of weight. Casters help when moving it about, but there's no getting around the weight. My other drawback with this model is a filter change indicator. It is basically up to you to remember when you've changed the filters. While having separate filters allows you to get full use out of each, most are replaced on different time intervals, so jot down those dates!

Though very similar to the R600, the AirPura UV600 air purifier provides HEPA filtration and smoke/odor/chemical vapor removal with the added benefit of UV protection against microbes. Durable, efficient, and extremely quiet, the UV600 is the perfect plug-and-go model for those who don't want to hassle with frequent filter changes, a lost remote control, or overly complex control panel that requires a PhD to properly operate. Just remember your filter changes, and the UV600 should provide years of consistent filtration and removal of the particles, vapors, and microbes that can foul up indoor air.
