Vanicream Sunscreen
I was so excited to find this sunscreen. I actually stopped using sunscreen for the most part last summer (and just tried to avoid staying in the sun too long) after I read that you're more likely to get cancer from sunscreen than UV ray exposure! Most sunscreens actually contain carcinogenic chemicals which get directly absorbed by the skin, and as awareness of this grows, there seem to be few alternatives. Even types that seem to be less laden with chemicals often contain fragrance, a catch-all name synonymous for chemicals. Aerosolized sunscreen is popular now, but this can lead to inhalation and worries about the propellant used. So with all that being said, I was more than glad to find a product that doesn't contain any dyes, fragrances, parabens, or other harmful chemical additives.
Vanicream sunscreen is soft on the skin and nose, too. It spreads easily and provides excellent coverage. The sunscreen does have a slight odor, but you can only smell it if you stick your nose to your skin right after you put it on. It goes on clear and sure beats walking around smelling like artificial coconut chemical stew all day! More recently, it has changed it's labeling to mention that it is water resistant for up to 80 minutes, as good an an comparable sunscreen, and unlike many deceptively advertised brand name sunscreens, Vanicream always has and continues to provide broad spectrum protection.
Overall, it's effective and devoid of the harmful chemicals found in more common sun block, including formaldehyde releasers, parabens and dyes. For more fair skinned complexions, use SPF 50. For others try either the SPF 30 or the SPF 35 Sport (for active outdoors individuals).
