  No more raining floor joists!
Reviewed by: Happy customers!!! from Wyoming and North Dakota

My husband and I purchased a fixer upper home in ND that had such moisture problems that the crawl space actually had raining floor joists from the upper level. After a year of trying everything to fix it, internet research found the Aprilaire 1710A Basement Dehumidifier. We live in WY so work on the house can only be done during non-snowy seasons. That means the house can be closed up for 7-8 mos. at a time. Figuring we had nothing to lose, we purchased it. Our crawl space is 30'X60' and though most of it has 4 ft walls, there's a 10'X10' section with 8 ft. walls. We weren't sure that this product would be large enough for our needs but after a year of using this dehumidifier, we're happy and relieved to report that we have no more moisture problems in the area. The price of this dehumidifier is in line with other ones we checked out and though they're all spendy I'm very frugal, it was the best $1100 we have spent in repairing this home. The cost of mold remediation would've surpassed this cost many times over. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Aprilaire 1710A Basement Dehumidifier for anyone who is having troubles with houses in high humidity areas.
  Dry as a Bone

We recently purchased an older house with a water issue. Even with an inspection we didn't realize how damp the basement was. After recommendations for a better dehumidifier, we selected the Aprilaire 1710a. It is great! Our basement is dry and the entire house seems drier. Even after heavy rains, there is no dampness in the basement. The smells are gone, too. We heartily recommend this unit. Only one caution...make sure it is level.

Outstanding dehumidifier. I am a co owner of a disaster restoration company and I have used many dehumidifiers for basement use. The Aprilaire 1710A is by far the best I have ever used.

Customer Q & A

Q1: My house is approx. 3000 sq. ft. I am installing this unit in the crawlspace which is approx. 4 ft in height. Is this unit big enough to do the job? I live in Tennessee.

A: It'll be close, but very likely, yes. There are really only two things that might prevent it from performing at its best in a space that size - the severity of the moisture problem and air circulation. Typically, for a space that large, you might want an additional fan of some sort down there to keep air moving in that space. This would help to ensure the entire volume of air in the crawlspace is dried. If you have a severe moisture problem, like the house is located in a low spot where moisture settles, improper drainage, or a leak of some sort, you might have to go with two of these models to adequately dry the area. If nothing is unusual about the space, then the AprilAire will likely work. Hope that helps!

Q2: Just an FYI....I purchased an Aprilaire 1710A from you for my unheated cinderblock basemant, your website lits the operating conditions as from 40 to 105F, the owners manual of the 1710A list the operating conditions as from 50 to 105F. Because the basement is unheated, I could possibly fall below the 50F operating recommendation. My unit is running great, but I think your spec. page should reflect the 50F rather than the 40F you have listed. I appreciate your fast and courteous service. Sincerely, Craig Wuennecke

A: Thanks for pointing this out! This likely needs to be explained a little better on the page. Manufacturer specifications are sometimes NOT as accurate as you would hope. Danby, for instance, rates their 70 pint dehumidifiers for removing 70 pints of water per day. We have tested this model to far surpass that amount under more humid summer conditions. Conversely, they rate the model for several thousand square feet in terms of coverage. This, again is not accurate, as dehumidifiers are best rated in terms of air volume not square footage. Without proper air circulation there is little possiblity of the 70 pint being able to adequately dehumidify a space of a few thousand square feet. In terms of Aprilaire, the low temperature range is is for best performance. This does not mean the unit will not work in slightly lower temperatures, but the effectiveness does dip as the temperature s. Since they use a refrigerant based dehumidifying system, the higher the air temperature, the better this type of dehumidifier works. Generally around 40-41 degrees is where most types of dehumidifiers like this really dip in performance. As long as the temperature in that space stays above 40 degrees or so, the Aprilaire should be able to keep your humidity levels down. I hope that better explains things.

Aprilaire 1710 A Crawlspace Dehumidifier Reviews
Aprilaire 1710 Dehumidifier

The Aprilaire 1710A Dehumidifier is a high-capacity, 90 pint whole basement or crawlspace unit. It is the latest, most reliable solution to relieve excessive humidity in your basement or larger areas throughout the home. This ultra-quiet, free standing dehumidifier provides 100% more capacity and 300% more efficiency than any leading portable dehumidifier.

What I like about the Aprilaire 1710A

The best feature of this dehumidifier is that it is portable and powerful. Steel construction lends itself to greater durability and use in crawlspaces, but casters make it easy to move. The water removal of 90 pints per day is under AHAM conditions but while testing in more humid conditions, that extraction rate will surpass the stated AHAM measurement.

An internal humidistat will automatically sense moisture levels to maintain optimal humidity levels and and control dampness, mildew, mold, fungi, dust mites and odors. The Aprilaire 1710 model operates down to 40° F and also features a replaceable air filter that provides some filtration of dirt, dust, and other large particles.

This model is actually fairly quiet while operating, and does NOT significantly add to your monthly power bill. It doesn't quite reach Energy Star qualifications but uses less power than many comparable models.

Something that makes the Aprilaire 1710 dehumidifier unique is that like all Aprilaire models, it is one of the very few dehumidifiers that is still made domestically.

Lastly, the 5 year warranty surpasses that offered by most other dehumidifier manufacturers.

What I did not like about the Aprilaire 1710A

As with all Aprilaire dehumidifiers, I wish it had a hygrometer on board rather than just a 15 position turn knob. The other drawback to this model is you must have a condensate drain line or floor drain nearby since the 1710A uses not bucket or condensate pump (just a simple P-trap with drain hose).

Overall, the Aprilaire 1710 A dehumidifier is a great buy for removing large amounts of moisture from your basement or crawlspace. The moisture extraction, usability, construction, and durability are all key features that set the Aprilaire 1710 well above other portable dehumidifiers.
