SEBO Automatic X5 Vacuum Cleaner
Not too sound too much like the milk ads from the late 1990's, but, "got carpet?" Concerned
about having a truly clean vacuum, one that won't simply pick up allergens that have settled out of the air and fling them back into the air you breathe each time
you clean? Favor quality and durability over inexpensive and disposable? Perfect! How about pets? That's just a bonus, but if you answered yes to those first three
questions, then the SEBO Automatic X5 vacuum cleaner might be the ideal addition to your home. With commercial-grade power, exceptional filtration, and durable
construction, the SEBO X5 powers through all types of carpet and even removes entangled pet hair. Nearly identical to the X4, the SEBO X5 upright can save you the hassle and
expense of replacing a cheap vacuum every few years while giving you cleaning results that will make you feel like you've just had your floor professionally cleaned. What makes
the SEBO X5 an ideal carpet cleaning vacuum, and how does it differ from the X4? After a week long test, this is what we found.
What I liked about the SEBO Automatic X5 Vacuum
While the SEBO X4 is very good at cleaning carpet, the SEBO Automatic X5 vacuum is exceptional. With a three inch wider cleaning head, the X5 can clean larger areas with fewer
passes, and the L-shaped cleaning brush is ideal for vacuuming around furniture legs. In addition to the larger cleaning head, the larger brushroll of the X5 allows you
edge from both sides. The X4, like many SEBO uprights, has edging bristles on only one side of the brushroll. However, the X5 vacuum has the edging bristles on both
sides of the brushroll, giving you dual edging ability. This means you can clean closer and more thoroughly to walls and furniture with either side of the cleaning head.
Filtration is another key feature that sets SEBO vacuum apart. While these aspects are going to be true for each SEBO upright, they make SEBO vacuums
better for those with allergies or asthma than most other units available. To start, the dust bag is a 3-ply bag that can be sealed when you change it. This keeps
dirt, dust and allergens trapped away instead of reintroducing them into the air. For this reason, we generally always recommend a bagged vacuum over
bagless for those with allergies, asthma, or COPD. Next come the filters. A motor filter further traps debris while a microfilter removes 99.9% of
remaining particles 0.3 microns or larger. What is left is clean air, free of allergens. Lastly, a sealed system ties everything together. This is a series of
seals and gaskets that prevents air leakage and ensures air that enters the X5 is fully filtered before it leaves the machine.
There are also a few key features that make the SEBO X4 well built and extremely durable. SEBO made a name for itself in the commercial cleaning industry, so their
vacuums are built to withstand the rigors of long hours of everyday use. A durable ABS encases the X5, and as a German manufactured home appliances, the motor and
components are built for the long run, typical 12-15 years of solid use. Though it does have a belt driving the brushroll, it is a lifetime belt, meaning unlike others you
won't be stuck tearing your SEBO apart to replace the drive belt every couple years (or sooner with many cheaper vacs). All of this is covered by a five year warranty that
covers everything except wear parts, like the brushroll, filters and bags. In all, the SEBO X5 offers professional-grade performance in a residential package.
Like the X4, the SEBO X5 upright vacuum is only one of two SEBO vacuums that have automatic height adjustment. As you move from different heights of carpet or from
carpet to smooth floors, the cleaning head will adjust itself up or down for the optimal cleaning depth. This removes any guesswork as you clean across a variety of surface
in your home or office.
Other convenient features of the SEBO Automatic X vacuum cleaner includes a slim 5.5 inch profile when lying flat (ideal for under furniture), a hose and quick release
wand that provides and additional 8 feet of cleaning reach (great for dusting, spot, and above-the-floor cleaning), three included accessories, indicator lights to let you know
when to change the bag or check the brushroll, and a "sealing strip" that is located behind the brushroll. The sealing strip helps to improve suction and prevent debris from
being kicked back by the brushroll when using the X5 on smooth floors.
What I did not like about the Automatic X5
The lack of brushroll control and suction control are features that some will miss. Suction control generally tends to be more important when using your vacuum to clean
rugs or when dusting or cleaning delicate items. Often though, most people set their vacuum on the highest suction setting, never for it to move again. More importantly, it
lacks brushroll control. Because the motor isn't independently powered, the brushroll is engaged whenever the X5 is one (except when in the upright, locked
position). While the sealing strip helps with smooth floor cleaning, ideally you don't want or need a brushroll when vacuuming tile, laminate, hardwoods or linoleum. If you have
smaller areas of smooth flooring, it likely won't be an issue, but with several rooms of hard flooring, you may want to consider a Felix, canister or SEBO with brushroll control.
More powerful and quicker cleaning the X4, the SEBO Automatic X5 offers a range of features and accessories that allow for smarter cleaning with less guessing and less work. Like
all SEBOs, the X5 is durable and provides filtration far superior to your more common big box upright. While the lack of suction and brush roll control won't work for some, on
large areas of carpet, of any height, the X5 excels and offers just the right mix of convenience and reliable, efficient cleaning.
